What do you do when your knob doesn’t fit your hand properly? The stock knob is way too small for my 3XL hand so I started looking at the aftermarket companies. I checked Anarchy, Raceseng, Lathewerks etc. and found the Ashiko knob from Raceseng looked like something that might work. The price however didn’t work for me($100+ for a shift knob!!)
Being the owner of an antique 70 year old atlas lathe, I decided to make my own.I picked up a chunk of 303 stainless and went to work. As a rookie machinist it took me a couple of hours but was happy the way it turned out. The stock knob weighs in at 137 grams, mine 503. The extra weight really does help the shifting and I really like the shape, especially on the 1-2 shift. The other plus is no adaptor needed, just screw it on and tighten down. Total cost for the project, $18
