So what does it mean if your pipes are black? Mine get black after awhile but only the inner ones. I thought it was normal??
Sorry, I didn't explain well. The tail pipes and surrounding bumper area get very sooty in only a single drive. When hosing the back of the car you can see the soot run off. My driveway is stained with black sooty marks from washing.

On another note I went to check the oil in the new engine and found it a quart low!!!!! Oh, crap. Then I pulled out of the garage and found a large puddle of oil. The damn filter had come loose from the factory engine.

I decided to take this one off and spun on a new one with safety wire. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

I've debated doing that, but if the filter can vibrate loose when torqued to spec, what's to say the band clamp couldn't vibrate loose? I know it has a locknut on it, but aren't they still susceptible to vibration loosening? How do you know how tight to tighten the band clamp? Could the safety wire loosen?

I don't mean to come across as a prick, I'm just curious. I've never used safety wire, but I know it's a thing for motorcycle racing and track days etc.

Honestly, after every filter I have personally replaced and TQ'd I have had no issues.

It is better than nothing. Very cheap insurance. It has locktight as well so all the bases have been covered.

So how should the tail of the safety wire be finished? Are you screwing with me? :headbonk:

Same here but I also do a re-torque after the engine reaches full temps. No leaks so far.

We are having fun! No doubt your safety would provide insurance and is effective. If this was an aviation safety it would have to meet standards. For example the long run of wire has no twists. Also it would have to have the proper amount of twist per inch, same for the pigtail which is wound in reverse of the main run and then bent.

That is awesome. Thanks for the video.

After thinking it over I should redo it anyway. I anchored it to the body of the car and under torque the filter attached to the engine will move some.

Why don't you do away with the wire itself and rotate the clamp so the end of the clamp makes contact with the oil filter cooler itself. Another words, take the clamp off, flip it so the nut is top side or at the 12 o-clock position. This way if the filter tried to loosen the clamp itself would hit the cooling passage extension preventing the filter from coming loose. Having the wire on the way shown in the picture will pull on the filter when the engine torques over. That's stressing the filter itself.

That is genus. The next time I get the car up I will give it a try. Are you using that method?
