Forgot to say that I'm trying to figure out how scored cylinders could cause this noise. I guess if there was massive combustion blow-by going on it could certainly make a noise like you're hearing. I doubt the pistons were sloppy in the bores and that wasn't the cause. You did say it sounded like rushing wind noise I think somewhere in the thread. I sure would think that the oil level must have gone down noticeably on your engine if the scores were that bad.

It went through a quart and some in about 2500 miles

The noise was more of a "chat cha cha cha" type noise. The videos don't do it justice. I am just glad, and also sad, that there is definitely an issue and I am not being dismissed. Big thank you to Autonation Ford in Margate, very happy thus far. It's a bitter sweet situation, just want my pony back.

Glad you got resolution. The relief is something isn't it?

Definitely, I'm just hoping the rest of the car is good when I pick it up. Scratches, dents, and quality go work is up to par. Crossing my fingers.

Yea I hear you. Somebody scratched the fascia in front of the hood when washing my car (same local dealership that did the oil change where the tick developed) so I tend to avoid the offer to wash the car now. Also somebody left a coolant bottle cap under the hood when I picked up my car from its long block replacement (not a local dealer bu the only I could find around here that dealt with the problem before). Otherwise it looks like everything's up to spec. I'm just crossing fingers that the new engine makes it past its next oil change without developing the same problems as the last one. I expect Ford would be even more reticent to abide by the warranty a second time.

Also given how easy it is to pull a spark plug to look for cylinder wall scoring I'm surprised they don't do that earlier. You'd expect that suggests it's really unusual, but I was going to ask the dealer to look for that right off the bat, since one of the only people who got a replacement for this problem asked the tech to take pictures of what they found, and that was an issue, and it was something they found in my engine as well (this is not my engine below).

I know, it worries me the engine might suffer from the same thing after the first oil change. The good I see, is that maybe the oil it gets right off the bat is Motorcraft full synthetic, not the break in oil Ford throws in there from factory. I say, if its going to do it again, itll come out within the next 3-4k miles when I do the next oil change. I cant fathom another short block, thats ridiculous, but I am hoping for a worry free ownership from here on out.

The oil they put in my engine is the standard Motorcraft synthetic blend. There is one person I'm aware of whose new shortblock suffered the same problem that necessitated its replacement, but I think that it's getting struck by lightning twice.

If that's the case, cars going bye bye. Trading it in at that point and getting out of Ford forever. I'll go back to Infiniti and their bulletproof 7 speed and VQ37HR.

This person you speak of, he had a replacement already, and the NEW block also had the same issue?

Yea. Same goes for me. If this new engine starts acting up, I'll do my damndest to get it fixed, but I'm getting rid of it and as much as I'd like a GT350, I'll get a Corvette. Yea he got the oil change tick on his original engine, got a new short block, and it started acting up too.

No one has ever gotten a reason for why this happens to the '11-14 Coyotes, but Ford is a big company. They have statistical control for quality. I guarantee that the changes for 2015 include measures to prevent it and whatever other teething problems Ford experienced by cutting 18 months off their engine development time. You don't need a new crankshaft, new connecting rods, pistons, valves, valve springs, heads and intake manifold to make 15 horsepower.

Bear in mind your engine sounded slightly different from the '11-14 oil change tick:

Really puzzling on what might have cause the cylinder scoring. I'm wondering if it's on the thrust side of the cylinder, and if so are there oil jets that are supposed to lubricate the cylinders on the Coyote?

Other possibility is that during assembly there was some kind of mechanical damage done to the piston/rings and that caused the cylinder to score as miles piled on.

Also, what's hard to imagine is why would the engine start ticking after an oil change? All I could attribute that to would be a lifter or two that somehow drained out while the engine was draining oil.

The '11 and '12 Coyotes have piston oil squirters. I believe the '13s and '14s do as well, but almost any auto blog/rag you'll see says they were removed. I have been to auto shows where the engine cutaways were labeled as having oil squirters for the 2013s and 2014s as well.

I have read about some of the engines replaced for this noise having cylinders that were out of round. Also you figure the changes made to the pistons in 2013 were probably aimed somewhere along the lines of stopping problems. Recall they put some coating on the skirts to reduce friction. Perhaps it was an early attempt to limit this issue. I have not found any posts about 2015s suffering the kind of tick some first gen coyotes suffered after an oil change. With your case, unless we start seeing systemic evidence of that problem, I'd just chalk it up to factory defect. With the '11-'14 I would like to know how common it is. Forums on not statistically representative of the population.

My buddy with a 2014 has the BBQ tick, same as the video you posted earlier. He has over 40k miles and never had an issue, plus he is tuned.

I called him out on it while trying to listen for my type of engine sound, which his engine did not exhibit.

That looks like a ring issue. The sound it makes kind of blows me away. Depending on the liner finishing technique a certain percentage will cause a ring failure. The internet makes it look like a lot but in the scheme of things it's likely a few hundred failures per 100,000's of engines produced by a manufacturer.

I wonder if it's caused by the first oil change due to lack of oil pressure from an empty filter and the particular engine was marginal to start with.

Any update on the repairs? I'm thinking you and I have the same issue Ruby.
