GT Automatic transmission temps?

How hot does your automatic transmission get. I have a 2017 GT auto and my transmission fluid temperatures are regularly reaching 200 degrees in traffic. The ambient temps are only in the upper 80’s. kind of wandering what to expect once we get into the upper 90’s. the temperature gauge shows 200 degrees is about midway thru the expect-able range, but all my reading says 200 is hot and 180 is ideal.

I do not have a transmission oil cooler, not even sure that the transmission has fittings to attach one.

Those temps are normal and your car came stock with a very large transmission cooler from the factory.

Mine is usually around 195-205 in traffic.

Cruising is 175-205 depending on temp and how hard I'm driving it. Highest I've seen it is like 208F.

There is a factory dedicated ATF cooler. Mishimoto does make a bigger aftermarket one though.

I wouldn't mind doing the after market ATF cooler but how easy is it to refill the fluid as there isn't a fill tube?

There is a small dip stick on the passenger side, on the side of the trans under the car. I assume you could fill it there using a fluid pump (like one you would use for a differential).

I'm sure all transmissions are designed slightly differently and around different temps. Also worth noting the chart is made by a company that seems to sell trans coolers, Lol.

Also, The basis is that higher temps cause the fluid/oil to break down over time. If you change your ATF semi often then it will reduce this from causing damage.

I have a 5c converter mine never goes above 205 even when im hammering it.

Going to add a VMP Heat exchanger to replace my Roush intercooler. This should add more than enough additional air flow to cool the car on hot summer days. If the transmission temps keep climbing, I will upgrade the transmission cooler.

The weak link is the stock fluid, my car has only 5500 miles on it and when i get to 20k miles i will switch it over to amsoil synthetic atf which is proven to be far superior in protection over the stock fluid! I had it in my prevoius car which had a tremec magnum and yes the magnum uses atf for its lubrication!

I'm with dominant. Don't believe this stuff about lifetime fluids. Buddy of mine, performance shop owner that rebuilds GM auto trannies often says that auto fluids should be changed at 30k miles if you're gentle on the car and less than 20k if you're modded and run it hard. At 20-25k miles, the auto trans fluid comes out every bit as burnt looking as engine oil at a 6-7k change interval.

Sometime this month when I change mine I will write one up. But it's fairly simple.

1. Loosen bolts on trans fluid pan, get a large drain pan and let all the fluid drain out.

2. If you're changing the filter, pull the pan off and the filter is usually right there on the bottom.

3. Reinstall the pan, tighten bolts in a sort-of star pattern (there's alot of bolts).

4. Measure how much fluid you drained out so that you know about how much to put back in.

5. Open dipstick, use a hand fluid pump to pump new fluid in, check level on flat surface, repeat as needed. (Have to check service manual to see if fluid is checked in Drive/Park/etc. All cars vary)

Remember that draining the fluid this way usually only drains about 1/3 of the total capacity. The rest is held in the torque converter, lines, cooler. Usually what I do is do a change this way, drive it a bit, change it again. That way you get a good percentage of the fluid replaced. The only way to replace all of it is to bring it to a shop which can flush & fill it with a machine made to do so.

200 is normal. The automatics come with cooler from the factory and is regulated at 200 degree. 200 is the perfect temperature for modern automatic and fluids. Don't worry about it.
