I always get a kick out of the guys that claim "Ford engineers designed it, they are gods, so it must be perfect" or some such nonsense. If they only knew....
I know it's hard being an engineer - there are many conflicting requirements and not a lot of time to meet them all. Often times management or accounting has more weight than engineering on certain decisions as well.

Racing teams certainly do switch rear gear ratios depending on the specific track they are running at. They have the luxury ( that most of us don't have ) of having 2 -3 complete rear axle assemblies with different gear sets installed available for a quick swap, if they feel the gears they are running aren't getting the job done well enough.

For the rest of us, we have to find a compromise between what we think will do well for us on the track and for every day road driving....and how much of each the car will be used for.

Probably at least 3.90 and possibly up to 4.56 gears would be more appropriate for this engine. 3.73 is not enough gear to take advantage of the high redline and will really tame the car down. I know going from 3.73 in my last GT to the standard gears in my 2015 the car is much more sedate and relaxed to drive.

I would also want gear choices. The 3.73 would be acceptable to me since I will be daily driving it, but I think a steeper gear would make the car more fun, even for daily duties. Ford is really setting the GT350 up for the weekend warriors IMO. With this gear it's not as serious a track car as it could be.

Edit: I may want different seats. I'm worried I won't fit in the stock Recaros. I really don't want leather either. My back and hips are both too wide for the factory 2015 seats. I can manage ok, but if the Recaros are similarly narrow with even taller bolsters it may be impossible for me to sit in them.
Not trying to be a #$%@ but if you cant fit in the stock seats, you wont fit in the Recaro's. You will fit in at 24 hour Fitness. If you cant fit in a car seat its time to hit the gym. Your health is more important than a car.

I am a little over weight and could spend more time at a gym, but my hips and back are not wider due to fat. I'm just not a little, scrawny guy. I'm about 6'4" 230 or so, which I've been most of my life. The difference is now at 47 less of the weight is muscle.

Now my belly - yes that is much bigger than it should be! :D

Yeah I'm worried I'll have to cut up the Recaros and weld them back together wider and get them reupholstered. It will probably put my seating position slightly off center as well because the console is a fairly tight fit to the right side of the seat.

Trackaholic- we get that, but listening to people bitch about why a road race car isn't set up for the drag strip gets old real quick. Please bring a little bit of sense when you go out to the internet (not you, general request).
You can easily calculate the tire diameter since we know the size of both the GT350 and GT350R rear tires. Also, we were talking about 3.73 not 3.77, right?
It doesn't make sense to gear fifth to 180 mph, when you'll never see more than about 160 on most road courses. Why don't you use the gear ratios from the close ratio T56 Magnum XL, the correct tire sizes, and 3.73 rear?
Yes, typo on the final drive. I think my spreadsheet has 3.73 and I wrote it wrong in the post above.

I'll take a look at the T56 and see where that ends up. Certainly lots of room for personal preference as well as optimization for the tracks in your area. For me, even 135 is probably higher than I'd ever hit with "only" 500-ish HP. Even the viper guys are topping out about 135 where I am, so for me I might as well have a taller 5th and 6th for fuel economy on the street.

We have high HP (tube frame) stock cars, Vettes, and Vipers (and even a couple supercharged Mustangs) pushing 160 at Summit Point and VIR. Even I've hit 150 (okay, 149.9) in my slow 350 HP Mustang.

You and any car owner have tons of options when it comes to rear gears. It's called the AFTERMARKET! Ford isn't going to spend time/money on certification and testing for a bunch of gear options for this car. That's why they have Ford Racing Performance Parts. They didn't do it for any of the other LE cars they've done. You (we) have been lucky to get three or maybe four gear ratio options across the whole Mustang lineup over the last 30 years.

Let's complain about wheel colors again! :headbonk:

Makes a lot of sense that limiting options will help keep cost down. I'm all for that, especially because I think for my daily driving use 3.73 will probably be the best choice!

I don't know what tracks you run but 3.73's will be great for both Sebring & Daytona. Better than the 3.55's in my opinion, If anything I think a little more gear is in order.
yep,

i have run both with 4.14 gears. 9.5k rpm...

that is kinda the point of the post.. the gt350 street car, that people will track. not the 350r that posers that will let it sit in the garage, or the silly track people that will put r compounds and try to make it better than the 350r..

sure put the 350r with 3.73 gears only.

but i think those that buy or struggle to by a 350 for a one solution car. a 3.55 might be perfect or at least worth of an option.. and the point of the subject {option}..

many of us are not as talented as you and cant drive 11/10s all the time..

and being 4mph faster into corner 1, or 2mph faster out of corner 5 on street tires is not the point..

i am just a humble driver.. just moved back from extreme performance tires to super sports for the track..

cant feel the difference yet, well i can. but it is not worth the time and expense.

still have a huge smile on my face when i am done..

Sigh.................

I assumed based on your original statement you were talking about gears for the track, and judging by your location, tracks I probably had some experience with.

I don't know a track that I go to that I would want to run a 3.75 gear
i think the pack that adds coolers and such is great. but really i think with the weight and power a 3.55 torson would be a better choice.
See where I'm coming from?

Anyway sorry I offended you, I was just trying to be helpful.

Hopefully we will do an event together sometime and I can buy you a beer or beverage of your choice.

cant tell you how much you did not offend me.

that is the whole point of hopefully this thread..

i think the gt350 should have some choices, odd that i would chose a 3.55 and coolers, but a choice..

the gt350r. not so much.. and i think they have it laid out wrong with comfort options.

but the R is supposedly limited. so it really does not matter..

as to cocktails, i got beer way covered if we get the chance!

shoot me a pm..
