Hi all,

Just got my 2019 Mustang GT PP1 last Friday and it has about 400 miles on it. It’s my first manual car so not sure if what I’m experiencing/hearing is normal or if there’s something wrong with my driving (or the car).

Basically this happens mostly when I’m in reverse and slipping the clutch (not stepping on the gas). I’ll let off the clutch to start inching slowly but when I let off a bit more to reverse faster, I hear this grind/click sound (not a continuous sound, more like a pop sound as if a rock hit the underside of my car). I sometimes hear this sound when I’m slipping the clutch in first gear as well, in parking lots or inching up on my driveway ramp.

I know I need to minimize slipping the clutch but also read that it’s a necessary evil to navigate at slow speeds. Can anyone provide some insight to this?

Looking into it further, it sounds like it might just be my Torsen diff. According to Optimum Performance's page on their Ultra-Guard rear axle fluid, "Torsens typically will pop and bang during low speed turns which is normal and does not affect the life of the unit." Also searched through these forums regarding "Torsen diff pop/click" and found numerous posts regarding this. My apologies for creating another thread on it. I swear I tried searching "grinding/clicking when slipping clutch/reverse/1st gear". Didn't even occur that it'd be the Torsen diff.
