Hey guys, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to cars but I purchased a new V6 automatic mustang with the premium package and have been noticing something that just doesn't feel right. As of now I've put about 1200 miles on it (a couple road trips for work), and whenever I'm backing out going from reverse to drive there's almost a hesitation for about 2-3 seconds until I can physically feel the car go into drive. This is after I come to a complete stop and when I just pressed on the gas (before I knew this was going on) it would almost stutter then start going. I've also noticed this at stop lights when going into 1st gear as well. I plan on going to the dealership as well about this as its only been 3 weeks but I wanted to see what you guys thought it might possibly be?

Mine sort of does this too. Backing out of driveway and going from reverse to drive, it takes about 3 seconds to go into gear. This is normal though and some of my other cars that are automatics do this too. Just don't be hitting the gas, before it changes into gear and it won't "slip".

As far as the 1st gear slip, not sure what you mean. Do you put your car in park at stoplights?

No sorry for the confusion about the stop lights lol, I meant when I try to give it gas (typically as smooth as I possibly can) I feel a clunk or a slip about 1/4th of the time, and I hate that you say it's normal for something that just hit the 1000 mile mark, I've never had an automatic do this before or been in one that has (unless it was over 250,000 miles) lol. I'm still going to give Ford a call tomorrow.

The upgraded version; security package, 18" wheels, 3.55 slip rear axle, etc. and i'll try and get a video tomorrow morning of it before I head out to run errands!

Normal.

It's waiting for something to get to right condition. I think it has something to do with either rpm or time at zero mph after going backwards. If you shift to D while still rolling backwards, it won't go to d until stopped for a second. Also, it seems to take a little longer when cold and rpms are up a little higher. Almost like a protection thing. Anyway, my gt does it.

It's just frustrating I think to hear that some people are experiencing it and some aren't, especially with a brand new vehicle. After I go into R i sit there for a couple seconds completely stopped, then shift to D, then have to wait 2-3 seconds and still feel a clunk

Alrighty so I took it to the dealership this morning and they drove it/ran diagnostics. The technician told me that the feeling of a slip from R to D is just a prolonged engagement sequence, so it just takes a couple seconds regardless. The "slip" at the stop lights is actually just the quick shift from 1st to 2nd, and he said with these newer models it's much quicker (almost if you blink you'll miss it), mentioning that a bunch of ford owners have a distaste for it because of how it feels. So we're all good and I didn't have to pay a thing :)
