I haven't installed any stereo equipment in over 20 years, and I don't even want to get into now. So, let's just say I know effectively nothing. Went to a local shop, and this is what they quoted, thoughts?

JLAudio 10w3 2 ohm $270
JL audio rd 500.1 $230
JL audio c2 components $280
JL audio c2 coaxials $200
JL audio lc22 audio interface $90
JL audio bass knob $45
amp kit 5ch (it's really going to be 2, 1 for the sub) $175
labor front components split/crossovers $175
labor rear coaxials $125
labor 2 amps $425
dynamat (front doors) $45
custom box and amp plate $325
JL audio JD 400.4

$2,800 installed

For that price, it is a solid quote and will be a noticeable upgrade over anything factory. Speaking from experience you can easily spend quite a bit more. One thing I recommend that you add or look into is Dynamat for the trunk, it will make a huge difference in sound quality, quiet down the car, and prevent any rattles from the bass in the trunk.

So, I ended up taking a different route. I figured I would replace the door speakers myself first, and see where it would go from there. I ended up getting a set of Morel Maximo ultra 602 coax from Crutchfield, and installed them over the weekend. WOW, did that wake things up! So much so I ordered another set to replace the rear deck. I couldn't believe the difference it made.

I expect a whole new level with all 4 being replaced. From there, I'll see how it sounds and maybe the only thing I might go to a shop for is a sub and mono amp. Honestly, it sounds so good with just the front replaced, I could just leave it as is. I don't know, it's truly play by ear. I can see how this can turn into a money pit though. I have a feeling with all 4 it's going to sound great and I'm going to be like, "well, I've gone THIS far, might was well get an amp and sub now..." :cwl:

Now think about how awesome it would sound with a front component system instead of the coaxials....

I’d rather not! :cwl:

Although I seem to be visiting the Crutchfield site an awful lot now...

Crutchfield can be addicting....ask me how I know :) I'm decent with stereo installs but the B&O makes it quite complicated to upgrade. I really wish there were some high-end audio shops nearby but no such luck, as I really do want to upgrade the entire system. I have added a dedicated amp and moved to a subwoofer enclosure and don't use the stock 10" subwoofer.

Let me chime in.. You can get the Kicker Keyloc Dsp to run off the head unit if you don't want to mess around with the cars software. For subwoofers I recommend a SSA GCON 10, I own 1 myself and if it means anything they are hand made in the USA.

I also have the kicker key 200.4 in my GT which has impressed me so far. I just finished my build on here if you want to see where i put it in the car. I did make a T harness from a harness I bought on ebay and used some 9 conductor speed wire to help with installation.

Adding the subwoofer is probably the easiest for the OP. There are quite a few LOC's that allow for adding a dedicated amp to for the subwoofer. OP has the base system, so the sky is the limit as far as subwoofers are concerned. He doesn't have the subwoofer enclosure and not restricted to a 10", unless wanting to "look" somewhat factory and installing an enclosure in the side of the trunk like the factory systems that do have subwoofers. I've never heard of the Gcon subs but I can imagine they may be really good subs.

I would enjoy seeing your install. Can you link to where you have it posted. Did you start with the B&O system?

Unfortunately I only took some pictures of my build but I started with the base system. My goal was to improve sound and stereo imagining. Add some bass but be practical as this is my toy.

My system consist of:

Stock poly speakers & Tweeters

Kicker key 200.4 amp. - This amp is magical.. It has a built in dsp and uses a microphone to retune the eq curve of the factory radio using Artificial intelligence.

Kicker keyloc dsp. - Just like the amp it uses AI to adjust the eq curve of the factory radio to flatten its response. Also has a built in RTA

Kicker dx 1000.1 - A great sub amp ive owned for years and decided its new home is in the mustang.

Subwoofer - SSA F8L 8 inch in a hitchbox customs enclosure. A nice size for removing if needed, not as heavy as a beefy 12, and decent output for a small driver on 800 watts rms.

Here are some pics.

I have a 12" Audiofrog I bought to try in a simple box while I figured things out and saved up some $ for either a Zenclosure or something more custom. However, storage space was a priority for me and golf clubs means no JLA Stealhbox, I am actually thinking about trying this and may be worth your time to at least check it out. They have three size available but IMHO, the sizes or cost are not different enough to go with anything but the 12" in a Mustang (only come in 2 OHMS)

Around lunch today Amazon showed they had 4 in stock, by mid afternoon they were sold out. I am 80% sure I want to do an A/B with this, if it wins, the AF replaces my shop sub which in no slouch, if it looses I can throw it in the Highlander, my daughter's Mazda 6, or her boyfriend's CRV. Damn it, I should not have hemmed and hawed so much...

How much were those speakers? I might follow in your foot steps. And are the speakers riveted in place or bolted?
