Are any of you guys from the Chicago area old enough to remember the late 60's when you could fill up you Mustang GT for $5.50 at the Clark gas station with 100 octane fuel and a pack of smokes, cruise all night and not have to worry about the economy and inflation? Every time I reflect back to those days it puts a big smile on my face. Always wished I had a time machine so back in 2019 when I sold my Vette I bought one.😎

In 1968 dollars, $5.50 would be around $48.00 today.

So, $13 for Marlboros, and $35.00 in the tank.

Nope. Not that old but I do remember in high school when I wanted to drive around chasing tail all day all I had to do was put $5 in my tank. $5= 100 miles back then. (Late 90s)

Damn. Glad I don't still smoke!
I think it's interesting that perceptions and reality are so often very different.

OP could still be smokin' and cruisin' for chicks like he did in 1968, for about the same money. But it just doesn't seem that way.

When you're a kid, cruising for tail in Dad's Mustang, $5.50 might not seem like a lot of money. But most of us didn't really have any bills, so that $5.50 was free to go as far as it could.

Let me tell you about being old. I remember going to the corner store for my mom, and getting a quart of milk, a loaf of bread, a pack of Pall Malls, and a comic book, for less than a buck.

Here in Motown, I think when I started driving in '65, gas was about 23 or 24 cents a gallon.

I am still mid-40s, so not legally old... but I do remember my dad pulling up to the pump, asking them to fill it up and for a pack of Pall Mall, handing the guy a $10 and getting change.
I am old enough though, to remember when every joint in my body did not hurt when it was cold and damp...so maybe I can claim honorary membership in the old guy club?

Countless hours spent cruising in the late '80s and well into the '90s. Good times. Then life got in the way. It's still fun to go for a weekend cruise, but it's not the same now.

Let's see, the lowest I remember was early '60s and 28.9 cents was the GAS WAR price. Normal price was 29.9 cents.

When I got my license and Mustang in 1978 gas was around 50 cents, and I was working at a Shell station pumping gas and changing oil. Gas went up to 65 cents with the Iran Hostage crisis. We had a stupid green, yellow and red flag system as to who could buy gas, along with the odd day even day crap.

I don't know if it was just in So. Cal. but those days sucked except for my being able to get gas whenever I needed it. We also got a really really good discount, but don't tell my old boss.
