Does dropping an oil pump gear on the ground and breaking it prove you need to upgrade ? Has anyone slammed an upgraded oil pump gear on the ground to prove it can take it?
. Heres a picture of factory OPG. I dropped this gear from waiste height and it broke.

Gen3 tg and opg failures seem exceedingly rare. I’ve known more people who have broken pistons in na motors than who’ve broken tg/opg in boosted motors. If peace of mind is the goal, clearly we must replace the stock pistons too.

and I’m not a metallurgist, but dropping something on concrete that is designed to go round and round is not exactly a useful test…

…kinda like pushing a Mustang off a moving train and declaring how useless the tires were in keeping it upright 😉

I had 95k miles on my stock opgs when I pulled my engine and they still looked brand new. I regularly wrapped it out to 8k and caught the limiter more than I'd like to admit. I wouldnt be doing opgs on a gen 3 unless you are planning to abuse it.

He's not wrong on additional parts you will want. Did you change out the factory OPG and crank sprocket? That's a $3000 parts and labor job in and of itself. You can do it yourself but will still have added cost of parts. Your going to need to at the very least upgrade to bigger injectors and a Boost a pump. You will need new spark plugs a colder thermostat 170°. You will need a dual valve catch can. Your going to need a tuner and a custom tune for boosted application. $1000 is a good estimate for that. Plus gaskets and seals for OPG job. DO NOT SKIP doing OPG. The factory gears are weak and when they let loose you need a motor. So yes $3000 additional is a safe guess. Heres a picture of factory OPG. I dropped this gear from waiste height and it broke.

OPGs aren't necessary. Tons of cars running around with out em including mine, boosted since 2018.

Stay off the limiter and it's not an issue.
