Ford is likely a little more concerned with having a slightly better coefficient of drag to increase gas mileage than worrying about a few horsepower. The honeycombs are simply the design elements they went with.

I will say this though.

I used a dremel to open up most of mine. Just the full ones, not the little or half honeycombs. Came out completely factory looking. Now, when I look through the holes, I can directly see my PMAS air filter. Did it help? Well, seat of the pants maybe, maybe not. Runs hard! But monitoring my nGauge and air intake temps, it has certainly decreased them. I can honestly say that it has certainly increased airflow and reduced my temps. Has it given me a horsepower increase? I’m sure it has, but what that number is unknown. Now, even with my PMAS that I was bitching about previously, my temps are always within 5-6 degrees of ambient temps unless I’m idling in the hot humid air then they will rise a little. But now, even a quick sprint up to 30 mph drops them right back almost instantly.

I’m happy with how it turned out and happy even for the increased breathing ability. I haven’t noticed the effect of higher drag coefficient. Of course, I’m in a convertible so my drag coefficient is likely HORRIBLE with the top down lol.

Just my 2 cents...

For the stock air cleaner open up 4-5 more grille honeycomb for an effective ramair mod...can't say for hp but you will see lower intake temps and a tenth or two increase in mpg! ..that is if you get a high flow air filter.

It is for drag coefficient to help with the MPG calculations. Same as the active grill shutters on other models. By adding these things they get a "credit" when doing the MPG averages for CAFE.

Will it help make more power? Probably, but don't expect much. No different than dyno results using an open element filter being higher with the hood open than closed. Larger area to bring in cooler air than under hood.

Seem like either drag or the increased airflow would be rather insignificant.

It could perhaps help with top speed too but how often do we need to go 155-160 MPH?

I'd probably get a good feeling from seeing decreased IATs. :)

I'm still thinking it might also be partly to help from aspirating items and getting the air box clogged up.

In other cars I've often found them full of leaves, trash and cigarettes after 10-20K.
