I am close to pulling the trigger on CAI for my car(either Steeda or JLT). Mostly for the sound ,because its cheaper than mufflers, and I may get a few ponies. I know I won't with mufflers. lol

That being said there is alot of talk about intake temps. Is that because we have a guage to read now or is this really a give and take scenario with these intakes.

I am really happy with this car, just trying to make it my own. Not looking to better one aspect and screw up 2 other things as I've done in the past.

So is this IAT thing a real issue or just something to keep us busy on the net? By real issue I mean am I losing 10hp around town to gain 5 on the highway?

Have any been proven to have lower IAT's than the rest?

Thanks! Steve

Hey Steve,

A CAI when combined with other supporting mods will add a fair bit of performance and efficiency to your ride. The IAT "issues" are exacerbated by the fact that it is a readable measurement. If you are not racing the car they are not a giant concern, but you do want to try and keep everything cool for better longevity. Many CAI's will get you 10-14hp (sidenote our Windstorm and the JLT CAI make the same exact line for line power) on top of the better aesthetics of your engine compartment.

If you want sound you definitely need an open intake filter because closed box will be quiet like stock. Iats can be an issue if they get too high. Climate matters most here and driving conditions matter as well.

That could not be further from the truth. Our Severe Windstorm will almost make your ears bleed with the symposer tube connected.
I was assuming no sound tube as it seems most people remove it. I personally hate sound tubes but yes running the sound tube with a closed box intake will be louder than if you removed it with the closed box intake.

The term "cold" air intake is a misnomer. Its been widely accepted (although still debated) that they actually let warmer air in during city driving. Obviously there are variables based on the type and brand. While this isn't a new concept, I'm sure people are more conscious of it now that the S550's have an IAT gauge.

As far as the temperature effect on horsepower goes...I'm sure others can address that. But obviously warmer air isn't gonna help.

Warm air temps on these open intakes is just a part of owning them. Idling or stop and go traffic will push your IAT way up, but get moving a little bit and they'll drop back down to ~ambient. The high temps used to bother me, but they really have little obvious effect on power. If they do I've never noticed it.

Worst $350 I think I've ever spent and the "gains" are dubious at best. That's my opinion...brand I'm using I don't think is relevant. they're all the "same". I never see intake temps less than 4 degrees over ambient and that's at 80mph on the highway. These intakes are worth about $100. Tops.

The car pulls timing with 150 degree air and 200 degree cht right? So an open element filter might hit that temp sitting stationary idling with 90 degree weather probably in 5 minutes. My steeda intake temps go up pretty fast in traffic, something like 2 degrees every couple of seconds.

^Totally agree. But CAI gains are debated at nauseum in other threads...

To address the OP's specific question about cold air intake temps - if you're really concerned about IAT's with a CAI, i'd probably avoid getting one. But in real world driving you probably wouldn't notice any loss.

I read somewhere that stock is 100degree IAT's when it starts pulling timing, and most tuners raise it to 110-20 before it starts pulling timing with their tunes. Don't quote that though lol.
