Gas Guzzler - Highway MPG

Today I took the "Race Car" out for a strictly freeway drive to check my oil usage(3 quarts in 1630 miles) at highway only and gas mileage. I got close to 25 mpg. It was 24.5 to 24.8 at all times. I drove 120 miles today and kept mainly at 65 mph. Never reaching 80 mph (speed limit 75, Texas is fast) except for one 5 second passing. People were on my butt all day.

If a car gets close to 25 mpg, how can that be a gas guzzler? The federal government is ripping us off. :headbonk:

GT350 has 3.73 gears? It shouldn't burn much more gas at highway speed than a GT PP.

Government probably sees the 526 hp and gets nervous.

I think the Corvette gets a break because it has cylinder deactivation, even in the manual transmission.

Maybe they should set gas guzzler tax by weight of vehicle. Let the 6000-8000 lbs cars and trucks pay the tax. Those vehicles usually have a terrible aerodynamic profile as well.

The gas guzzler tax is calculated from the highway cycle mileage (the most favorable).

The GT350 is actually on the lower end of the scale.

The highway rating is 21MPG. There have been a few discussions about this and we all roll our eyes but it's a whatever at this point.

I can get around 24 on an extended highway run but honestly if I was the slightest bit concerned about it I wouldn't of bought the car in the first place. Furthermore I only got these numbers when I really tried, I sit at about 12mpg combined.

I think its safe to say (based on what people say in the other mpg threads on here) that on average the car is sat at around 16-18 mpg.

I think at these numbers the gas guzzler tax is fair, but coming from the UK where most cars hit 38+ mpg very easily I can laugh at what people consider good gas mileage here (oh the joys of cheap fuel). I am used to paying the equivalent of $6 a gallon.

The gas guzzler tax should be abolished. It's just sad that the government has to get their fingers into everything.

I agree the GT350 gets fairly decent fuel economy, both at cruise and even with some spirited street driving thrown in. No way it should be a gas guzzler, even if you were to agree with the concept that gas guzzlers should be taxed.

My 6 cylinder Ford Explorer gets way worse fuel economy. It's not even close.

I understand the reason behind the GG Tax as to when it was enacted, but it really doesnt apply that much anymore. Gas is cheap and will stay that way from now on. As light trucks dont have it. So people buy those gas guzzlers.

Really? In the city, I was getting like 13. That was probably my driving habits though. I don't drive aggressively in the city but I didn't shift much when I didn't need to. hastagbecauseloudnoises

I only get a little over 10 in town, but I live in Hicksville, pop. 3000. No freeways or bypasses, 35-40 is probably the max limit in town but I get to it really quick.

At the end of a roughly 360 mile expressway drive at 65 to 70 MPH in August, the MPG display showed 26.7 MPG (actually 24.92 MPG when calculated by hand). The return trip, with a bit more road construction, showed 25.7 MPG (23.93 when calculated by hand). Overall average for the first 5275 miles is 21.27 MPG, and has consumed just less than one quart of oil (will go in for its first oil change in spring when taken out of storage).

My 2011 GT automatic, for comparison, has a 26.96 MPG overall average for the first 49,700 miles and manages 26.5-28.5 MPG on that same 360 mile expressway drive. It also tends to consume one quart of oil between 7000 to 7300 mile oil changes.

Sure, I agree. It doesn't do much to discourage bad behavior anymore because it's mostly applicable only to market segments that are essentially a luxury today (e.g. performance market). In its present form, it's simply a carbon tax. Hopefully those dollars get put to something positive for the environment, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Ford will have tested the worst version so they only had to test one car, which means they used a GT350R.

In Texas most people are doing 80 in a 65 zone. It is kinda risky because they are taking the risk passing crazyly not the slower driver. But the slow driver even though they only a little under the limit is causing the problem. I am a Driver's Ed teacher. And I have told my students over and over. DON'T be the stick in the mud in the river, because sooner or later something is going to come snap you off. Go with the flow is the best policy if possible :doh:
