I think it depends greatly on what you want to spend and what you want it to do for you.
I did a lot of research and decided I didn't need or want a lit of the features of the high end detectors.
I don't want my RD to automatically block locations, the PD know about that feature and will set up in those spots. I don't need arrows saying where the signal is coming from, it doesn't really matter, I still need to react/slow down. I don't need it to connect to my phone, car or internet. I just want to know if there's active radar around me. And I'm willing to learn to "read" what it's telling me.
I went with the Uniden R1 and saved about 60% off the high end detectors. It receives the same signals and reacts long before I see the threat.
Since June it has saved me twice and I still don't see how spending $300+ more would have made any difference in that.

I just got a escort redline 360 last month. Haven’t gotten a speeding ticket yet!

in all seriousness, the detector and waze together seem to offer the best protection.

The arrows help a lot, so they're a must for me. It's nice to know if they're coming from the front or back. But be aware highway patrol cars can now have TWO radars (front and back), so now you have to look for them in front, and slow down even when they seem far away. If you're detecting them, they can zap you too. Oh, I use a V1 with only Ka activated. The new one costs too much (V1 gives you peanuts for the old one), but might have to upgrade at some point.

Uniden R3 is very good.... go up to the R7 and you get the arrows like the valentine has with front and rear detectors and you get features that are extra on the valentine. I have both, love them.

Both the valentine and uniden are great detectors, can’t go wrong.

V1 needs to make a sleeker more modern unit.... it’s too large and bulky, even with their optional remote kit the main unit still needs to be windshield mounted for the remote unit to work.

I used to run K40’s a few years back, which was IMO the best invisible, undetectable and “hidden” unit when looking inside of the vehicle and never failed as far as function and performance.

Granted times have changed and there’s various apps to help now too, but if I were to use a windshield mounted unit, it would be the Escort brand.
