Hello I want to buy a used mustang this summer with less than 20k millage with Auto. I do alot of driving and want something reliable. everywhere i look, its about that tick on the GT and silly issues that i never personally dealt with before. i am not going to mod it. I want to keep it stock. Would it be safer to get a v6 instead of the GT if reliability is my main concern? Of course i want the GT but i don't want a car that will give me problem if i want to keep it for long term. I currently have 2 crolla, 1 sienna and a lexus es 350. they last for ever. I want something more fun for the next car but still reliability is my main priority. thanks in advance.

Might as well get a V6 its better anyways, cheaper insurance, more unique, lighter weight, better handling, better MPG and it has more low end torque than the GT because of the redesigned intake manifold on the 15-17 cars. Most 5.0s are on the way to the junkyard.

The situation is like so many others in this age of internet communication. A tempest in a teacup. A few 5.0 engines have had issues with piston slap, but nothing that has been pinned down and only a minor number of engines. There is a ticking noise caused by the FI pump that scares people after all the gloom and doom sayers about bad engines, but it is a normal sound. The 3.7 is an excellent engine. It gets great mileage and performs great. If you drive a lot, it makes a very good choice. Mine has over 90,000 miles with no hiccups. All Mustang engines have been around for a long time and have a great reputation for reliable service. Don’t let the trolls ruin it for you.

I agree, it depends on what you want vs need. The V6 is robust and has a good amount of power. If you are real pressing for performance and feel that it's worth the extra $$$, get the V8. Either is a good choice.

Perhaps test drive a few of each just to make a concrete decision.

Good luck

I test drove both. Of course the V8 Is the ideal choice. Just need to do alot of calculations to see if it's worth it. I don't do any drag or street racing. Atleast not yet. I might just get the v6 for now and get a V8 later on. Unless I get a good deal on a V8. I don't have too many places around me where I can truly let the V8 go wild. Lol. Way too many police and camers around my area. Smh. And if I buy it used from a owner. If the car is under warranty, can I get the warranty extended?and is it worth it?

Ford LOVES to sell used cars with new warranties. I considered this myself. You can get up to a 5 year warranty (from the time you purchased the used car). It costs some, but can be worth it. Just tried to find a dealer that sells it for a good price it's the thing.

I was thinking of buying from a direct owner. I don't trust dealership. Ford cars definitely need warranty compared to Toyota. Lol

A forum is really not the ideal place to be asking these type of questions. Your only hearing from a fraction of a percent of total sales on here, and a good portion will be negative. Do your research, test drive etc. and make your choice. As long as you buy a car with warranty left on it then there is nothing to worry about. (Mine was a prior rental car and she runs just fine, any issue I had Ford repaired it under warranty) As with any car if you take care of it and do not beat on it daily then she will last a long time. Good luck in your search.

Our other cars are Honda so there is that... lol

You may consider purchasing an E90 BMW instead. I hear the Mustang’s interior is inferior and feels much like driving a truck.

You need to re-think your logic map. Just because you drive a 4 or 6cyl does not mean you are immune to tickets. The late model Mustang with V6 has more than enough oomph to get you plenty of tickets. You just won't feel as cool getting them.

Amen on taking care of your car. I feel many do not understand what that really means. Now are there mfr's that build in looser tolerances to avoid some issues, you bet. Toyota, Honda have been doing that for years.

They have (and my opinion) still do make some pretty boring cars. They are meant to go from point a to point b. No fuss no muss. If that is your #1 priority get one of those. If you are looking for something a bit more fun, a Mustang with a V8 and being relatively cheap, it could be what you are looking for.

I am not saying you should just trust a dealership but what makes some guy you just met any more trustworthy?

In any case, I bought a 2015 GT from a Ford dealer in March and haven't had any issues with it. One of the benefits of buying from a dealer is you can get a CPO Mustang, which gives you an extra year on the warranty. If the car is still within the factory or CPO warranty I believe you can extend it up to 11 years from the original date of purchase.

I hope that you mean "road course at a track or autocross". Street racing is illegal and dangerous, please don't do that whatever you drive. :)

You are right, there are tons of dirt-bag, lying sellers on the internet. At least a reputable dealer will put it through a multi-point inspection and sometimes give you a short term warranty. Though they are usually more stickler on the prices that they are willing to consider. YMMV.

I'm buying new, and I plan to use mine for some roadtrips. I don't plan to do any real heavy modding right away for sure. It will likely have some later in it's life. If I end up with the tick, I end up with it, I don't personally believe it can be a deal breaker. In my opinion if it's going to become a real problem it should be noticeable early in the engines. It's important to keep up regular maintenance and listen for changes, signs of bigger issues, etc. I actually really liked CJ pony parts video on the subject as he goes into a variety of things.
