Thanks, I figured someone would know better than me the differences between the 2. My parents owned a 5 series and a 3 series and had nothing but issues with them (mostly electrical) so I got soured on the brand and haven’t really kept up with them.
There's that, yeah. And even if you have no issues, the regular maintenance is a good bit more than a Mustang ...and you'd get the same apathetic dealer service experience.

Still though, if I wadded up the Mustang in a ditch, I'd probably look for a M240i. It's similar to the Mustang in that its a lot of performance for the money. I haven't tracked a car in 12 years, so I just want a fun commuter.

You have to do your homework with BMW models and years. BMW early turbo engines, starting 2007 or 2008, had lots of heat buildup problems that lead to a variety of failures and electrical issues. Normal operating temperatures were around 230 degrees. Non-metal parts and connectors won't last long in that kind of heat. BMW has been addressing the heat issues slowly since 2011 and the latest engine designs no longer have any heat issues. The cars are the most reliable they have ever been and the engines are bullet proof.

My 2018 Mustang with 18k miles had more electrical issues and related costs than my previous BMW with 54k miles, $1400 vs $900.

Depending on your budget a low mileage used GT-R is another option. Or a used 991.2 Carrera S, or an M4 Comp, or M3 Comp, AMG C63S, or...seems like there's a few German options if you can swing going low mileage/used and have a little more budget.
My first choice would have been a used 991.2 S or GTS, but I couldn't find one under $115k. If I live long enough and can still drive (doubtful), I'll buy an M3 or M4 Comp in about 4 years.

Yeah i did some youtube watching on the M240i and the M2 , you think the 240i with the MSport package is better deal than M2? and 2 wheel drive over the all wheel drive for the 240i ? I have just started researching them so still lots to learn, reviews are all pretty good on the new ones though.

I plan on trading probably next for a 2026 model as I have a 2023 GT now and usually trade every 3 yrs when warranty is about up.
If this was me I'd probably be looking into BMW and Audi. The worst thing about those cars is the cost of repairs after they are out of warranty. Depreciation can be pretty high, though, for the same reason.

Again, don't believe the posted power and performance specs. BMW understates everything. I'd get the M2. It will hold it's value extremely well. There are 10 year old M models selling for more than they cost new. Aside from that, what are you looking for? If you want a great all around sport coupe, the M240i will suit you just fine. The B58 engine has excellent performance, a great torque curve and no lag. Handling is excellent and the ride is reasonable. I have had 3 and 5 series models with AWD, that are the equivalent to the current M240 and M340 models. I didn't care for it. It reduces front suspension travel and makes the ride more harsh. AWD helps in some models that don't have enough traction. But, I don't think it is needed in an M240i. The only real drawback to the B58 engine is the turbo doesn't have enough capacity at high rpms.

If you are looking for the ultimate track machine, the M2 is for you. The S58 engine is a beast. It could really use the AWD. It has a very little bit of turbo lag, but you will hardly notice and you won't be able to get the grin off your face. Great handling, OK ride, super brakes.

If your budget can afford it, the M3 competition with AWD is as good as it gets. Incredible acceleration and awesome handling.

If you are looking for some easy horsepower on the M240i B58 engine, a JB+ plug-in module ($225) will add 4.5lbs of boost and over 40hp, if you have 93 octane fuel. A JB4 plugin and a low restriction catted down pipe will add another 40 - 50 hp. The M2 S58 engine uses the JB4 as well.

I am running the JB+ on my Z4. It dynos 442hp.
