Through a microphone, and processed. The sound is absolutely modified. Noise Cancellation is absolutely processing. So to clarify, it's not just piped through a microphone. Furthermore, the microphone itself acts like a filter and accentuates things as well. For some reason audio non-engineers tend to think Noise Cancellation is some kind of magic that isn't processing, when it certainly is.Guess what, so is the Eco-Boost's. But instead of Piping it in through a Tube it's Piped in through a Microphone.
Maybe you will understand what I'm saying. I'm not on either side of this. Again I think everyone is misinterpreting the comments from Ford on this system. What they say is their engine makes unpleasant sounds so to make this car more 'comfortable' we cover up the bad sounds. It's like good touch and bad touch. Ford isn't going to say their brand new Mustang Turbo 4 sounds like one, so they 'fixed' itThrough a microphone, and processed. The sound is absolutely modified. I do think it sounds GREAT in the cabin though, just want to get things accurate here.
From the Edmonds review for those that haven't scrolled through this whole thread..they thought the piped in sound would get tiresome for sure.
The EcoBoost's power delivery is strong from low revs, and Ford engineers weren't shy about piping intake honk into the cabin. It's unabashedly a four-cylinder sound, and this will appeal to some people as much as it turns others off. The raucousness grows a bit tiresome if you hammer the EcoBoost near the rev limiter for a while, but around town the engine is muted, pleasant and mannerly. Despite the EcoBoost's solid torque, the grunt doesn't hit all at once when you pick up the throttle exiting a corner. In this respect, the four-cylinder Mustang is less of a hooligan than it could be.
