This question has been addressed before, so apologies for any redundancy.

My past two vehicles have had a full sized spare, and that's the way I like it. I don't necessarily need the tire changing gear, such jacks, tire blocks, and a proper lug nut wrench, but I would like to be able to call for help, swap a proper tire, and then be on my way, avoiding a tow.

Does anyone have a full size spare in a PP that is properly bolted down? Supposedly the 255 40 19 tire is fairly close in diameter to the 235 50 18, and can fit into the tire well if deflated somewhat. What parts did you use to secure the tire?

---
Side note, in my current vehicle I carry a full size spare, and a heavy duty 12V tire inflator / air compressor as well, purchased at a local auto parts. This spring I attempted to use the device, but it failed, some plastic parts had degraded over the past few years, in the Texas heat.

The well in the S550 is not made for a full-size spare. None of us has one. All spare tires are temp spares. Probably could rig something if you didn't mind it protruding into the trunk by several inches. Would look kind of Euro-rallye-ish.

I believe there's some concern about having a spare that's much smaller than the 27.5 inches of the rear PP tire. Not that the overall diameter is a concern, but side to side difference would create differential speed within the Torsen and that wouldn't be ideal.

A front-size PP wheel and tire sticks up out of the spare tire well about 3". No way around it.

I'm really considering this as my first mod. I'm OK with it not totally fitting I the spare tire well. Being stranded somewhere without a spare tire because the sidewall it torn or the slime won't seal. No Bueno.

I've posted the pic before, and I'll post it again here: this is why I will never run a car without a spare.

Instead of being stranded for a couple of hours late on a hot summer Sunday afternoon in the middle of nowhere like I was here, I could have just swapped the tire and been back on my way in minutes. Never again.

(Catastrophic sidewall failure, in case you were wondering.)

Those of us with PP are at a disadvantage due to the front brake size and overall tire size. So unless you carry two sized spares (to save your diff if it's the rear) you might as well have a good tow service plan.

^^^ That works too.

After a ton of research, I had found a temp spare for a larger Mercedes (S550 maybe?) that had a 19" wheel and tire with an overall OD a bit over 27" (near perfect), which would have required an adapter/spacer.

I was all set to buy one, but they were hideously expensive new and I never found one after scouring eBay for weeks, so instead I bought a front PP replica wheel for AM and bought the cheapest front tire I could find and called it good. Cheaper than the Mercedes spare and an adapter by a long shot. I took the hold-down for the compressor and made an extender to secure it, bought a jack and a Gorilla breaker bar, and done. I'd rather have a full size spare anyway, although it would have been nice to hide it all too.

I'm pondering cutting the trunk mat to fit closely around the spare to finish it off a bit, but for now it's just been sitting on top of the tire.

I wonder how long it would take to wreck the diff in a torsen equiped car. I thought these were gear based units so you wouldn't have any clutches to overheat.

you don't need a spare. just make sure insurance covers roadside assistance. id rather flatbed my car home then put a donut on and have to limp home myself.

I have roadside assistance (have since the debacle above), but I'd still rather change a flat and go than wait for someone.....

I carry the assistance for real problems on the road, not trivial nonsense like a flat.

the spare would have to be properly secured, or it could become a flying object in an accident.

So I am wondering if a 255 40 19 spare will squeeze into the tire wheel, and how it would be secured.

A PP front tire/wheel fits snugly in the well, and sticks above the trunk floor about 3"....

You can secure it with the standard spare hold-down, which you'll need to modify for length. I used the hold-down for the 'mobility kit'.

This x100000. I have two free tows a year with USAA, minus well use it. No way I'm throwing a temp spare on my car lol.

Plus no room for spare tire due to AirLift anyway.
