Front pony

I am considering either dipping or painting my grill pony. Has anyone removed it? How difficult is it to get off and back on? Don't really trust my masking abilities enough to feel good about doing it while it is in place.

I plasti dipped mine, Texasgator. But I did it in place. Masking it off was a bit of a pain. Took longer to mask around it than to plasti dip it.

The pony is plastic and has 5 pins on the back with metal retainers that are impossible to remove without breaking most of them. I used double sided tape to replace but the back is concave and it takes time to get the tape on and trim it. Simple enough but pita.

That's what I was afraid of. Looks like I need to just suck it up and spend a little extra time with the masking tape.

Here's a tip for the future. I own a dip and other protective coatings shop so take my advice as you wish. Start off by using 2 very light "tack" coats. Make sure both are completely dry. Then lay down heavier wet coats making sure each are dry before the next. 5 to 7 coats total. Any kind of masking you would want to remove while the last coat is still wet. Patience is key. It is possible to make dip look extremely smooth.

Yeah, I may re-do mine when the weather gets a bit nicer if I can get a smoother application. This was my first use of Plasti Dip and, while it came out okay (albiet bumpy), it's so easy to use, I can see peeling it off and re-applying it if I can get a smoother look.

Maybe my first two coats weren't light enough and/or I didn't let them dry enough?

Thanks, DVN. I'm gonna leave it as is for now. The rear GT letters and the 5.0 badges have the same texture so at least it's all consistent.

Anyone moved the front pony to the side of the grill like the snake on a Cobra?

1 When front pony is removed, are there pronounced mounting tabs that the pins to go into? Or with pony removed does it look pretty clean?

2) To get the Pony off without breaking the pins, I'm wondering if a Dremel cutting wheel might be able to cut one side of the steel spring clip, allowing that clip to be then slid off.? My dremel has a flexible cable attachment so I should be able to get into the space between the back of the grill and the radiator without too much trouble.
3) 'Attaching' the pony to the right side of the grill (like where the GT 350 has the snake), it might be easier to glue this in place more securely if the pins are still on the OEM pony.

Though I won't have my car for another 7 weeks, I wanted to pass this idea on to you guys you are playing with their front Pony emblems.

That's what I was thinking too.

You can see the outline of the molded recess in the pic above, Dave. I think you would have to replace the OEM grill with an after maket one to accomplish your plan.

Instead, what about mounting some other Mustang related badge or emblem in the spot your thinking about?

Bummer. I was thinking there might be ugly tabs, but did not think the whole area behind was the outline of the Pony. :( On to other mod ideas!

There's a separate thread asking for a "pony delete" grille, and even though it's a VERY popular idea, it's unlikely it will ever be made. I for one would love to have one though.

I know there will be the billet style grilles available eventually, but those look cheap compared to having the factory style honeycomb, but without the pony.

I wonder if some of the creative minds on this site might come up with a way to disguise the removed center Pony area on the factory Grill? Maybe a nondescript flat black oval? Or some other shape that blends in and does not draw the eye?

I don't get mine until mid-march. I plan to use a Dremel cutting tool to cut the metal clips on one side of the mounting pins. This way I do not have to break off the pins from the factory pony. then I can see exactly what the girl looks like behind the pony. If anyone can post a picture of the factory grill with the OEM Pony removed I and maybe others could get a head start on this idea. it may not be feasible, but I'd like to try in case it is workable
