looks like Russell made it official on his Instagram.. going to be in the Merc this weekend. I’m excited
Wow! Talk about the chance of a lifetime. Feel bad for Stoffel but Interested to see what Aitkin’s is all about. Cannot wait for the weekend.

And it was his own damn fault... too much blind spot I guess. F1 needs to mandate 'BLISS' which flash when the cars are overlapped so they quit slicing the nose off the other guy.

I think you’re being a little harsh. DK would not have been in Romain’s mirror so no way did he know he was there. He was also looking at Kimi and trying to give him to come back onto the track. Had that barrier not been on an angle, the car would have bounced of it. Just a really horrible set of circumstances.

I think putting George in the Mercedes was the right call. He's the future of the team, and is being lined up for whenever Lewis of Valtteri leave/retire. give him a race in the car now, so he can get some experience running a race weekend with the team (rather than just the young driver tests he did with them, which would have a totally different atmosphere). There's not going to be any pressure on him this weekend, as he's never driven the car before. If he's over half a second off Valtteri, we can chalk a fair chunk of that up to a lack of familiarity. If he's bang on the pace immediately, we know we have a proper star of the future on our hands. Mercedes get the chance to fully evaluate him, and Jack Aitken will get a chance to show what he's made of in the Williams in similar circumstances.

In other words, good call be everybody.

On a side note, the way things have been going this year, Russell will almost certainly get a late race puncture and Aitken will sneak into 10th in the Williams. Calling it now!

Interesting. George can get his first points in a Mercedes. I’d love to see Williams score in the points but I doubt it.

I‘ll bet George gets into Q3 and well into the points, maybe even a podium. Bottas better bring his A game or it’s going to be a very embarrassing weekend for him.

if you slice the other guy's nose off he'd BETTER be in your mirrors. If not, then the field of view is defective and needs to be addressed by the regulations. I'm glad the driver got off almost scott free but he caused his own accident.

The angle of the barrier was a bad choice by the track designer. Any angled surface should have been done on the other leg of the fence - recessed if you will.

During the after race review they showed the cars before the accident. They drew a line showing the view from the mirrors and DK was out of view. I still believe it was just a racing accident.

One thing I have learned about cars on a track is that they will always find the worst place to crash. It may take 5, 10, 15, 20 years but eventually they will find it. In this case there had to be an angled section to make room for an opening. They just need to find a way to make sure a car doesn't go through a barrier.

Correct me if I am wrong, but should George Russel win this weekend (a big if I know), he would be the first driver whose first points score was a win since Giancarlo Baghetti at the 1961 French Grand Prix

If he gets a podium, he would be the first driver to score his first points with a podium since Lewis Hamilton at the 2007 Australian Grand Prix

I'm sure it George was able to infect Lewis, he'll be able to do the same to Botas before Sunday.

On a side note, after Audi announced that they were pulling out of Formula E on Monday, BMW have just posted this online...

Lol, F1 mirrors have been defective for a VERY long time. Drivers say so all the time.

More to the point, RG moved across 3 car widths to avoid the traffic in front. Rookie mistake, everyone knows you have to look over your shoulder before changing lanes!

/r/formuladank makes me so happy. I finally found a place that I understand EVERY joke/meme!

As a card carrying member of Team LH (since 2008 when I first started following F1, before anyone says anything...) I am so excited to see George get a chance in the car!

I've never been a big RG fan but this was not his fault. Go to 26 seconds. And remember they are doing over 150 MPH. This whole thing took a couple of seconds.
