So this doesn’t hold true across the paddock. I won’t discount the feedback from the driver to the engineers, because its absolutely vital. That said I don’t think the majority understand(drivers) how that correlates to changes on the car. Vettel for example was extremely good at that and was basically an engineer level driver. I get Hamilton’s frustration, he just made a mistake in expressing it. It happens. Not knocking him, but Hamilton has been VERY privileged with that Merc. And that was great for him but Merc is in a really bad place at the moment and I don’t think they actually know what to do to correct it. People can say what they want but Redbull and Horner have this dialed in(the car) at a whole different level then the others. There’s a reason why he(Horner) went after Newey years ago and ponied up the 10mil a year for him. There’s only a few drivers that make more then Newey. I hope I’m wrong because I just want to see good racing, but I don’t think Redbull even has it turned up all way. Did anybody else notice with all the bs about the budget cap being breached by lets be honest serving to many burgers to vip’s(400k), they(Horner) basically said here’s your …… fine, I’m going to run this right up everyone’s …. next year. And here we are one race in. Can anybody else recall so much hoopla about a teams pace one race in? I can’t.
I'm going to disagree with the bolded part of your statement.
All of these drivers are the best in the world. Given their level of expertise and experience (most have been driving since single digit age) their input to the engineers is massive in helping to make the car the best it can be in THEIR hands. Every driver has preferences to how a car performs and it is up to the engineers to make it perform the way the DRIVER wants it to. Obviously the grip around the circuit is number one and they all want more of this. However drivers also tend to want more under/over steer amid several other small preferences the engineers make happen.
Just look at Ricciardo and how the McLaren did not suit his style like the RB did.
Remember there are many reasons why the drivers are the highest paid employees...and it is not all about their on track performance.
