I know there has been a lot of talk predictions of the 5.0 moving to direct injection in the future but I'm curious who thinks part of the next engine upgrade will include forged pistons? Based of the changes they've made to the engine for the 2015 coyote it looks like they have moved that way but I would guess the bean counters made them hold those back. Personally I don't care for direct injection at this point but forged pistons would be a nice feature and could cut out some cost from future upgrades. I know this doesn't really affect most people because they won't do any heavy modifications to the engine but still... I what to hear others thoughts on the matter.

I doubt the Coyote will receive any more major upgrades in the future, certainly won't make it to the next generation. You'll likely see an entirely new engine before DI comes in, and that probably won't have forged pistons either. The hyper pistons in the Coyote have proven to withstand over 600rwhp with ease so I don't see a reason for Ford to put them in anyway. Other parts of the drivetrain will fail before the pistons.

I, like many, am expecting some minor tinkering with the Mustang for the 2017 model year but agreed I don't expect to see anything major. I also know that the current pistons can significantly outperform the current power output however I believe the same was true with the old crank and connecting rods but both of those have been upgraded for 2015.

I bet we see people crank these up pretty good. I am putting on a TVS and E-85 to the tune of 800 at the wheels. I bet it holds the power fine. Boss internals hold 850. Most of the blown engines bend rods before anything.

I don't daily drive the car. The longevity all depends on how hard and often you beat on it. I know several cars with over 30,000 miles on 650-700 HP.

The new rods are lighter, which would lend to efficiency of the motor. The primary change to the new crank is that it has been rebalanced to accommodate the changes to the rods and updated pistons (revised piston tops).

Forged pistons would primarily be for strength, and obviously Ford determined that they weren't necessary for this application. As Grimace pointed out, there are plenty of high power Coyotes out there to back up their decision.

Haha! Well I may have just joined the forum but I have been looking through this site for nearly a year. I also may be driving a year old V6 but I'm 26 and I've been around muscle cars for a lot longer than I have had my mustang. So I'm now quite green but I definitely don't have as much experience as many members on here. Point taken tho

I am seriously just curious because we all know Ford has a planned progression moving forward and their changes to the engine for this year are more extensive then I was expecting yet it seem incomplete. It appears to be a single step in a planned evolution for the 5.0. I could be wrong though and I was just curious what others were thinking. I wanted to look at other aspect as the main topics of future upgrades I've seen has been on rev matching manual trans and direct injection.

Agreed these pistons are plenty well designed. It just stood out to me as an area they may change. As we have seen many times in the past the Mustang engineers love to heavily over design the components when they get a chance. Maybe I'm just hoping they will do it since they had them for a while in the old 5.0s.

sounds right to me. I probably just have to much free time on my hands so I'm filling it by starting pointless discussions that pique my curiosity. So on that note I should go do something more productive.

For all the FI car's I've seen blow internals, the pistons were the first to go breaking ring lands.

Forged pistons aren't exactly 'better'. They are stronger for sure, but for a mass produced engine they can cause other issues like cold start noise and blow-by. I doubt the regular GT will get or even need forged pistons.

I think you mean phishing(aka scamming)?

Forged pistons are a bit tougher, but usually cost more to make, and are noisier while cold (they expand more, requiring greater bore clearance). I suspect that Ford will only use them in a "boosted" application.
A refined NA engine isn't likely to have a forged piston; the average driver doesn't usually wait to warm them up properly before driving hard. A decent "squeeze-cast" or hypereutectic piston will put up with plenty abuse, while requiring less clearance.

Are you saying someone can't know anything before they join this group? That's pretty petty.
