I am not sure if these cams will continue to be variable or not. If they are then there may be some differences in the fringe areas of operation. But to quote a duration to the lobe timing in the specifications leads me to think these may be fixed in timing. If that is the case then there will likely be a big difference where the engine may become a bit peaky in its power delivery.

I am glad you will be experimenting and look forward to hearing your analysis.
The VTC happens with the gears so it will definitely still be VTC capable. However something tells me that I won't be seeing VTC gears on our car in the future.

Not reliable enough or too much interference?
VTC cam gears have problems on higher horsepower engines. I usually delete them after 500whp. Been doing it on Subaru's and Mitsu's for awhile now.

Sorry noob question, but what is involved with swapping cams? Just a tune or are there other supporting mods required? Cams always seem to make cars sound better to me so if these make the car sound better I'll buy them for that reason alone lol.

I can't speak for the EBM but for the 05-10 the Ford Hot Rod cams were a NSR cam-which means no springs required when swapping cams, on those cars it was a relatively easy swap, had to remove some stuff, remove the valve covers, wedge a garden hose into the timing chain sprocket/mark the phasers on top to ensure the timing chains did not jump a tooth and follow the procedure for loosening the cam caps, remove the cam and re-install the new one.

Cam swaps are going to be difficult right now since the tools for locking the timing on these engines aren't available from ford yet and no available aftermarket solution as of yet. If any of you are familiar with the ms3 and MZ3 engines. The ecoboost uses the same friction washer method and requires special tools to lock the timing in.

Cams swaps aren't going to be for your average shade tree mechanic. Granted it will be a lot easier than swapping them compared to the FWD application. There is still the timing complexity and the valve lash that will complicate things. The buckets on these are shimless so a whole new bucket will be required to adjust valve lash, I've gotten lucky in the past and been able to swap buckets around to get the lash within spec on shimless bucket design but this isn't the norm.

This isn't to deter anyone just know what you are getting yourself into before anyone goes and breaks loose that timing. (point of no return)

I make the tool already, as well as the crank pin tool. Just a heads up!

Swapping cams is about a 5 hour job, and can be shorted to about 3-4 hours after a couple of times doing it. For the average home mechanic, I would recommend taking a weekend to do it. Take it nice and slow and make sure nothing is missed!

How about a how-to guide when you get those cams in? :)

I thought these were hydraulic lifters and didn't need shimmed or adjusted for new cams? Just coming from US market (and some euro) BMW's where you can add 30* and still stay with stock lifters.

Also, why delete the variable timing? again in BMW's they allowed for faster spool and most guys weren't deleting them till close to 1000hp, and some (e46 m3's) were well over before deleting.

Can't answer about deleting the variable timing, but I do know the head uses mechanical cam on bucket valve actuation. You have to adjust the clearance manually and it will eventually need to be readjusted.
