Ok all, thanks in advance for reading this and any input.

I’m a long time GM guy mostly. Spent years building LS platform cars and have heavily debated a newer LT1 car

I’ve also owned a Ram SRT10 and most recently owned a 2018 Challenger Hellcat so I’m not a fanboy of any one make and I can appreciate them all.

Other than a 2000 Lightning I have never owned a performance Ford and have had my eyes on Coyote based Mustangs for a while. 2015+

I’m thinking if possible I may look at going 2018+ with an A10 but I’m a bit gunshy by the sheer number of Lemon/Buyback cars I see on Autotrader, can anyone help me understand what’s up with that?

Id love any input in the subject. Am I miles ahead with a Gen3 or will I be just as happy getting into a well optioned Gen2 car and let the modding begin?

Im coming from a highway monster with the Hellcat but I look forward to getting back into something much more balanced in my opinion.

I'd suggest an 18+. If you're finding lots of lemon/buy-backs, I'm guessing that's because that's all that's out there right now. The pickings are probably slim.

Well I find some that aren’t but there sure seems to be a lot of them. I just didn’t know if that was potentially from the whole “engine tick” thing being blown sky high or what.

There are 10s of thousands of extremely happy 18+ owners (myself being one of them.) It's a very reliable platform that runs extremely strong. Don't be afraid to pull the trigger. I guarantee you won't regret it.

Buy brand new if you can find what you want right now. Terrible time to buy used

Hit up cargurus.com and do a Nationwide search. CG is much better platform for searching new or used than AT....

What BuyBacks are you seeing, such as what years and platform? GT, EB or Shelby?

Thanks I’ll check our CG

The buybacks are GT’s 2018+. It appears the notes have been “smoke from exhaust”, “transmission concerns”, “engine noise/problems”

Maybe it’s simply coincidence I found a few all at once. Obviously there’s a ton out there.

The smoke from the exhaust and engine noise could have been been bad valve seal issues and the "normal tick" - those were the only common engine issues with the rollout of the 2018's.

The transmission could be 1 or both of these:
1) MT82 had issues with shift forks. There is a thread on here with all the TSBs in the transmission sub-forum.

2) 10R80 was new to the S550 and first year issue in 2018. Issues can vary anywhere from low fluid, valve body or a bad gear cluster. All of these are outlined in the very large 10R80 thread in the Transmission sub-forum. Most of the issues were affecting 2018's and early 2019's. Later builds up through 2021, some people don't understand the 10R80 and are not used to its operation in certain Drive modes.

Those are the only things I can think of that will relate back to those Buy Backs you're seeing.

I found my 2019 gt base pp1 6 spd in a 150 mile radius of where I live this month. I went to a Toyota dealership who had it on their lot for over 2 months. They had just lowered their price to $29,998 and I decided to pick it up. With some patience and willingness to travel to get the right car you can find what you want out there. Quite happy that I went with the 2019 over the 15-17 years. The motor is stronger and it has more small refinements over the previous years

2019 GT premium here. Love the car and haven’t had one issue. Love the transmission, A10. Agree with what’s been said though, if you can find new go new because for what they’re already offering for mine it’s ridiculous what they’re going to ask for used.

what WOT stang says: there are tons of gen 3 coyote cars out there having no problem. i guess there MAY be a few bad ones, but the coyote (and EB) and A10 have proven to be reliable platforms. the ”tick” issue would be annoying (my car doesn’t tick), but it has never been demonstrated to be associated with a mechanical failure. i bought a 6sp because i’m not a street racer, and i enjoy the driving experience with a manual. and my wife stays away from my car.
if you are buying used, just be thorough when checking out the car, and you wont have any problems

In some cases the lemon/buyback could have been due to a supply issue. The part needed to fix it was on back order for XX amount of days and that met the threshold for a buyback.

A buddy had a Ram 1500 ECO Diesel back when they first came out and i want to say he had an injector that went bad, the part was something ridiculous like 6 months on backorder so they did a buyback.

Not all the buybacks are inherently bad cars, just do the homework on what the issue was and how it was repaired.
