The days of Smokey’s “Use the longest damn rod as possible” have changed a lot.

This is very true! 496 bbc by all accounts has a horrible rod ratio (1.37) but we spin them to 6800k and 7xx hp in big compression (14.1 to 15.1) race trim back in the day 🤷🏼‍♂️
There’s more than a few 2 stroke engine builders that embraced the longest damn rod theory and most all ended up in the trailer first.
With 4 strokes the introduction of roller cam profiles changed the way rod ratios dynamics were looked at.

On the 496’s back in the 90’s we knew we would tear them down in the winter so the short rod really didn’t matter. I never really thought the ls7 would live back in the day….yet here we are with thousands of boosted miles on them….hell katech does a time attack 750 horse NA motor they spin to 8500 with a 1.53 ratio and piston speeds in the 8900 fpm range and they claim it went 2 seasons without a tear down. I always said I wouldn’t go below 1.65 but a 5.4 is right at the ls7 (1.52)and I’m not going to spin it anywhere near 8500…🤷🏼‍♂️
