I have lived in my current house for 24 years and have never had a single problem with rats til now. I have used rat poison, and a lots of it, and still have these spawn from hell in my garage. and now look what they did to a year old set of very expensive Schroth Proi ll harness. Well to say I want them dead is pretty much what I am trying to do to the little basters. But how, I am open to any ideas. Oh I should also note that I have replaced the seal on the bottom of the garage door twice in the past three months and now this now this one has been chewed apart. UGH!!!

How about a professional exterminator, find out where they are getting in.

That would be the first step, then go to prevention & maintenance mode. There is an exceptional amount of RATS where you live.

Irritating as hell...

One of my favorite channels is the mink man on youtube.

On a serious note, you should build field expedient traps. There's plenty of vids on youtube on traps you can build that don't involve poison. The problem with poison is they go off and die somewhere, not always where you'd like (inside walls, cavities, etc).

Rats love peanut butter, build some tightwire and roller traps.

Friend of mine way out in the woods uses a special strobe light, seems to work for him. Search "anti-rat strobe" and you'll find it.

My dad traps squirrels and then drives over to quantico and stuffs them into the howitzer during live fire drills. They catch good air! Per Health and Safety regs each critter gets a helmet made out of half ping pong ball and rubber band chin strap.

Will - There must be a food source that keeps attracting them. We had some out back who ate all of our oranges . Once we got rid of the fruit and the birdseed, the rats split. What are they eating?

Sometimes they jack stuff up, not to eat but to nest. They tear up things to create nesting materials or they chew through stuff to create passages to dens. An empty vehicle is a perfect place away from elements and predators for them to shelter.

The easiest way to eradicate them is just to poison them all. But then you have to worry about where they finally die (inside walls and such).

This new light pulse stuff is interesting, but most of us wouldn't be able to employ it (unless you blackout windows to keep from annoying yourself or neighbors)

Step one would be to keep them out of the Garage. Seal up all access points.
Step two eliminate anything that smells like food, including garbage receptacles & BBq grills.

That should take care of your rat problem.

I got the little bas%@$! When he started to smell I tracked him down and found him and the bed he constructed with my harnesses. You were correct on the food source he chewed thru our dog food container (sealed plastic container), so I empty the dog food and replaced it rat poison.

Many people here have the same problem with mice: a garage with a food source. Glad to hear he just took a harness and you got 'em in time. A friend of mine, his Audi and its wiring harness? Not so fortunate.
