There is no way that is OEM. My buddy's dad was a test engineer for Dodge in the 80's and 90's and occasionally he brought home a test vehicle - one time a RHD Neon, which was kind of cool. The test equipment/setup is way better than that. Even a backyard engineer wouldn't have those silly bends, and if it were for anything other than sound, it would leak from backpressure through that dryer vent hose.

The strangest thing about it, though, is that it goes 2 into 1 before the data collection system, then back into two just to cross over and exit on the driver's side...?! Why not just dump it after data collection?

I think they were doing sound testing and wanted to eliminate the exhaust sound all together. I don't think that contraption is for data collection at all, just to muffle the exhaust.

I think you’re on to something. I don’t see any sniffer equipment either.

I bet that is it. This would be the best way to test the artificial sound generation system though stereo.

You could also get data about the exhaust vibration and drone.

I could think about a hundred uses in testing a car where you would want zero air exhaust note.
