My 2015 mustang GT with only h-pipe muffler delete and axle back exhaust has had a tea kettle sound for the last few months. Haven't been able to pin point the root cause. Since last week I have been smelling burnt rubber after a drive (nothing underneath). No exhaust leak after 3 exhaust shop opinions. I am left to believe it may be my catalytic converters. I'm at 86,000 miles now. What are your thoughts?

Doubtful it is your cats causing the smell. A blown cat will sound like marbles under a car. Probably you have a minor oil leak dripping somewhere that it’s burning.

do you have those exhaust clamps with the little piece of black tar in them?

It would also smell like rotten eggs if it was the cats going. From what you describe it sounds like a pinhole exhaust leak, maybe directly hitting some rubber somewhere. See if your tires dont have any mystery melting marks.

Have you checked around your coolant lines? I suppose a pinhole in one of those tubes could do a similar sound, maybe melting the hose? Just spitballing here tbh.

Tell us more about the tea kettle sound. Does it change with throttle/rpm? Happen at idle? Can you replicate the sound and check under/around the car to see if you can tell where its coming from?
