Whoa. That's major surgery.

My evaporator core went out several months ago and I resorted to self-help by recharging the system myself with a refrigerant that also has a sealant mixed in.

So far, so good. But fingers are still crossed.

Anyone written up a DIY on this? Some day this task will be out of warranty.
This.

No doubt I'll get stuck doing mine someday since I'll be well out of warranty when it takes the dump.

From what I understand the part was not upgraded. It was a stock part which means much like the e90 BMW 335 waste gate fiasco the solution will be to eternally remove and replace these as they go out.

I wonder if there's an operational consideration which may be giving these a short life? Should the AC be turned off when we shut the vehicle down or something like that?

My AC started blowing hot air at about the 16,000 mile mark, have it scheduled to be looked at tomorrow by my local ford dealer, they said if it was the evaporator they could have it fixed in like two days, we shall see, lol.

I'm a little worried about how the auto climate control works. Even when it's below freezing outside, both heat and cool air mix together to stay at the temperature you specify. By doing this, the electric fans are on because the ac is on. I would imagine parts are going to wear out much faster. For one, the fan is running all the time if your auto climate is on.

Brought the car in today to the dealer and it was confirmed, a bad evaporator.

They said it will take 2 days to order and 1 day to put in , so should be done by the end of the day on Monday.

Brought the car into the dealer today and the evaporator was switched out in about 5 hours, once again the a/c is blowing cold air.

My service guy said that they have a guy in the garage who exclusively does the evaporators and has gotten it down to a science because they do so many of them, lol.

I have not seen it documented or mentioned but - is the EVAP core failures more common with vehicles equipped with:

Premium HVAC controls vs Base HVAC controls?

Haven't seen anything in regards to the controls but that failures tend to be in warmer states like California, Florida, Texas etc and yes mine failed in Florida.

I was at the Ford dealership getting a free oil change on my F150 and I saw a Mustang getting the evap core replaced. The tech only unbolted the passenger side and pulled that side of the dash back. I'm sure there was still a lot to it but not as bad as removing the whole dash like in that previously posted picture. Unfortunately my Mustang's AC stopped blowing cold so I'm taking it in today.
