About to take my car in for an engine rebuild. For sure know my head gaskets are bad and i had just done the Timing chain kit with new phasers, bullit tensioners and OPGs. I am running rebuilt 10R80, 3.73 in my rear. Engine is pretty stock but wanting to get everyones input on a good rebuild kit or maybe what you guys recommend what i should do. Just rebuilding at the moment without power adder but eventually i would want to go FBO. long tube headers, a predator manifold and tune. Thank you guys in advance. I am located in East Los Angeles for reference.

How many miles are on the motor and why do you think the head gaskets are blown?

FWIW, you can go FBO, plus a power adder on these engines with relative ease. Iā€˜ve had nitrous (150 shot on E85) on my FBO car for 5 years now and I’m currentLy in the process of installing a turbo (with nitrous still). Oh and the best part is, I went FBO and added nitrous with just 472 miles on the odometer.

How does your oil look? if the head gasket is blown, you might expect to see white frothy or chocolate milky looking oil. Have you inspected the engine very well around the front oil seal and rear oil seal for leaks?

My car only has 8800 miles on it, but I recently pulled the timing cover and oil pan for OPGs, but what I found during disassembly was surprising in the intake ports and valves. I pulled my heads and walnut blasted them, along with the valves before upgrading springs, seals and retainers. Gummed up intake runners and excessive carbon on the valves can cause idling issues.

Lastly, one thing I noted on reassembly was that there was a limited amount of time (5 min.) to get bolts 6-11 torqued to 71 in-lbs because of the use of RTV sealer at the tee joints where engine meets timing cover, followed by 1 hour to torque all bolts. The same is similar on the oil pan, as RTV sealer is used on the four corners where the engine’s tee joints meet the oil pan. I say all of this to say, that it could be possible that you have a leak and as a result, it’s causing the burnt oil smell.

You can sift through my turbo install thread and see if anything shown in the photos resembles what you’re seeing. Post #96, #103 and #116 has info. covering the heads. There’s also info. in the thread regarding proper torquing and sealing of the timing cover and oil pan.
