Hi all,

does anyone have an idea what this rattling noise is? It is not constant, starts around 2000 rpm.

Dealer only mentioned that it is normal according to Ford, I doubt.

Tx

Its def not the "tick". Maybe something loose? Any work done recently? That is not a normal sound ive ever heard. What does it do under acceleration?

Yeah I also thought it would sound different than the typewriter tick or piston slap many people describe. I can only hear it from outside, not while driving.

to me it sounds like heat shield rattling... i had 2k rattle but it only did it under acceleration... I got a new engine out of it. took 3-4 months but my car is 100% finally...

No work done recently?

No work done… Let me have a look tomorrow if I can see any heath shields, not sure what is factory installed.

Did you also have rattling when accelerating in park mode or only while driving? And they replaced the engine immediately?

Both and it took forever... they replaced cam phasers/random parts till they didnt know what to do, Ford finally approved new engine. It had 11k miles... This sounds different than mine though. If you go through forums theres a 2k rattle post... its quite the thread... Good luck, just be persistant and courteous, worked for me and have a great relationship w/dealer now.

Check the heat shield nut at the top of the fire wall. I had a similar sound and the nut was loose on the passenger side just a thought.

thanks. Where exactly can I fint that nut? Is it in the top of the engine compartment or do I need to get below the car?

aero84,
From underneath the car, I posted this last year.
"I found something interesting while prepping the car to pull the trans for a new clutch.
I'm not saying that this is the problem. The heat shield under the passenger header/ cat was never tightened from the factory and can make a very similar sound to a ticking typewriter."

Check the trans block spacer plate, it’s a common issue across the S550 and F150 platform:
https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/threads/engine-transmission-plate-noise-fix.115718/

Also check the emergency brake cable and attaching assembly found under the driver side trans tunnel. This has been a known source of metallic rattle as well and is hard to replicate unless in a certain RPM range. The cable is loose and raps against the trans tunnel under certain conditions OR could be touching exhaust mid pipe. How to adjust the cable and assembly:
https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/threads/how-to-adjust-your-parking-brake.25204/

if looking at both from under the car, yes visually they will look “fine”, but take a closer look to make sure both are not a source of the rattle.

----

Also check the driveshaft center support bearing assembly. There is a small aluminum plate attached to the bottom of it which comes loose and rattles - see this thread:

And here the second clip from underneath the car.

Doesn’t it sound like piston slap?

Sounds find. Sounds like direct injection.
