2018 GT - Purchased New in August 2019

I dropped off the vehicle today at the dealership, but unfortunately the engine specialist isn’t there until Monday. Vehicle is at 8,000 miles. I started having issues with the “BBQ Tick” at 4,000 miles after my first oil change. After the dealership told me it was normal and showed me the TSB, I began hearing some very light knocking at specific RMP’s, specifically 1250-1750. At times I thought maybe I was being too picky, but it began getting louder overtime. As of yesterday, my Engine Light came on, the day before I was supposed to drop it off to Ford. I’m kind of relieved it did come on just so they can see I’m not being picky or paranoid. I’m also having issues with a “clinking” sound near the shifter, and a light “cranking” noise (sounds almost like you’re winding up a toy) when letting off the accelerator (goes away as vehicle warms up).

I don’t want to delve into the BBQ Tick because God knows it’s been brought up more times than we can count, but I personally don’t feel it’s “normal”. Wondering if others have had similar issues with the knock, the accelerator and noises near the shifter. Any feedback would be appreciated. Otherwise, I’ll just use this to document my journey into Ford Maintenance. Kind of sucks this experience is happening on my first ever pony.

Update: Car has been at the dealership since early morning of February 29th. Got a voice-mail March 3rd staying that the engine light was due to code P0316 (cylinder misfire), which they say is due to TSB in which the PCM needed an update. They stated my knock/ticking is possibly due to the timing chain, but that the engineer was not 100% sure. They could not replicate noise near shifter. They did not mention the accelerator. I have attempted to call my service agent twice and have left two voice mails, with no returned communication. It’s been 9 days as of today.

If you can’t get a response from the Service Center Rep, call the Ford 800# and establish a Case number with the Regional CSR. It bumps your concern and vehicle priority in that Service Center’s que. They HAVE to respond to the CSR by providing updates and a resolution for the fix to satisfy the customer.

You're not going to get much response because these are such minor things that only really bother you with your car. To ford and many others these are just normal things with this motor.

Thanks for the assistance! Fortunately, they called today. But I will definitely keep this in mind. Still no diagnosis, but they have replicated it and are still trying to figure it out.

These aren’t “minor” or “normal” things. They would bother ANYONE else on a brand new vehicle. Service technician has replicated the sounds and it’s not just the typical engine ticks and rattles everyone on here writes about. The car has been in service for 10 days. Got a call today and they are actually looking into the engine to see what’s going on.

UPDATE: Got a call from service assistant today. She states the mechanics are looking into the engine further and have replicated the noise I identified. They think it may be timing chain in addition to something else.

UPDATE: Received text from service advisor. They stated the noise they are hearing is common in F150’s, but not in Mustangs. They had to call Ford Engineers to talk with them about what they were hearing. They said they are going to start with replacing the phasers. They said if the noise persists then they would need to replace some of the solenoids. They stated the parts are a few days out. No clarification on the sound from the accelerator or if the RPM noise might be linked to that as well.

Edit: They called and confirmed this may contribute to the accelerator noise as well.

I really think that an OBll Code reader is a necessity. At least then you know why the check engine light is on. I make it a habit to go into the dealership often if they are doing something to my car. Much easier way to get an answer than waiting for "whenever" they find time to call you....plus checking in person will let them know you are in need of your car.

Very true. I need to get one. I live right next to an Auto Zone and always had them take a quick look, but no excuse to not have one. And I agree with showing in person. Unfortunately I work 60 hours per week and it’s difficult finding time. The service assistance has increased their communication with me the past 2 days which is good. I’ll be sure to update after I hear back from them again.

UPDATE: Not really an update, but wanted to notate this. Service assistance informed me they are still waiting for the parts as of today. My rental was extended until March 21st. Today is 17 days my vehicle has been out of commission.

UPDATE: Rental was extended. They are saying this past week has been slow in receiving parts due to COVID-19. So I’m hoping I can get my car sometime this week. Today is 23 days that they’ve had my vehicle.

UPDATE: Rental was extended over the weekend yet again. Today makes 31 days the vehicle has been in their shop. I'm possibly going to post in the other thread about lemon law options as Nevada does have a 30-day policy, but states it does not count days in which may have been out of the manufacturer's control, which I find very vague. I'm beginning to get the impression they can't fix it at this point.

UPDATE: They extended my rental for two weeks. During my last contact with them last week where they extended the rental for 7 days, the service coordinator (who’s been incredibly helpful, the girl deserves employee of the month) informed me that the techs told her it would be done within the week. One week passed and nothing. She updated me and told me she extended the rental for two weeks. She apologized and informed me she really doesn’t have any technical updates.

I have contacted Ford and now have a Regional Customer Service Manager looking into my request for a buy-back and reimbursement of my last month’s payment (thanks to Cobra’s feedback!). They told me to expect a call Monday on a follow-up on my case. Today is 37 days the Mustang GT has been at their service center. I still think they have no idea what’s going on with the vehicle OR they’ve attempted a fix and it didn’t work.
