then stopping at a red light for approximately 3 minutes the ECT jumped 13* to 197* and would have kept climbing if the light had not
1) how often are you sitting at lights for longer than 3 minutes?

2) 197* is not anywhere problematic

Unless you regularly see ECT temps over 210* I would not worry, modern engines are meant to run hot and don't need to be kept sub 200* for longevity. If anything, running them too cool (sub 190* is going to cause more issues than running them too hot (over 210*)

1) I also experience the same in stop and go traffic where it's impossible to get to a speed to provide any cooling.

2) It only stopped at 197* because I was able to get back to speed. If I were in stop and go traffic or completely stopped due to an accident or in line at the bank drive thru it would have continued to 215 or higher until the fan comes on. If it would indeed stop at 197* I wouldn't worry about it.

I would like to keep the temps at or below 200 when at idle. Which is why I'd like to test having the fan come on a little sooner. If the stock Tstat is 180* and I my ECT's consistently run 183 to 185 degrees while at speed, how can I not run sub 190* while at speed? I would surmise most of us are but without being monitored in real time with an Ngauge of similar device you don't know what your actual ECT's are.

From speaking to a couple of tuners our engines perform better running hotter than other engines.

I like to drive the car on the freeway 50 to 100 miles. Look at the ECT and set the fans to about 10 degrees higher.

I don't like them coming on when at speed.

My car runs about 185 so my fans are set to come on at 195.
I could reduce that by 5 but it never gets above 205 even in stop and go in the summer.

As long as the engine runs above 180 for a street car you are golden.

The mustang ECM calls 200 degrees 0. In other words it adds timing below 200 and subtracts above 200.

That is an over simplification but the trend is valid.

I had Lund modify the tune so fan comes on at 40% at 195* and 100% at 205*
