So I just got back from my local Ford dealer today, and test drove a EB Premium Auto.
I was origionally planning on getting a base GT, But was pleased with the off the line power of the EB, and really fell in love with all the nice features from the premium package, to the point where I would rather have them over the raw power of the 5.0. This will be my DD, and my daily commute is in HEAVY traffic in the middle of Houston. I'm lucky if I see 45mph. The MPG city is also a big factor.

as I'm weighing out my options, and future plans on the car I buy. I'm sure I will evently get board with the base power. I'm also new to the Turbo world. Everything I know if hearsay / what I've seen people done in the past.

1st question, is a Turbo Timer necessary on these cars? Do any of the tuners tuning devices act as one, like Cobb's Accessport?

2nd - as this car is my DD in heavy traffic should I stick with a more conservative tune from Cobb, or a balls to the wall tune from say livernois or Lund. I know they are reputable tuners, but how is their track record with these first tunes long term? I know this is a new platform and things are still getting worked out, but I don't want to tune my car, and come to find out it's too aggresive and I hurt somthing.

3rd - I do want to upgrade exhaust, but want to keep it emissions friendly (set it and forget it) is there anything 50 state legal yet, with good proven gains?

4th - Are bigger charge pipes compatible with this twin scroll turbo? what type of gains have people seen with them on other plattforms?

5 - Blow off Valve... If I can't have V8 grumble, I must have obnoxious sneezing. anyone currently working on this? ( i know it's "ricey" but I love it.

Alrighty I'll try this.

1. Not really necessary, just if you are beating on the car take it a little easy as you are getting to your destination and it'll cool down a bit. Also these turbos use coolant to cool as well so doubly as unnecessary.

2. I'd say cobb is a great choice for a DD. Especially with the added options of on the fly map changes which you can load a 93 stage 1 tune and an eco tune and swap them on the fly even while you are driving if you wanted :-).

3. This one I'm still on the fence with as well. I'm most likely going to stick with the ford racing axle back, and probably replacing the suitcase with some glass packs or something.

4. Intakes aren't really showing enormous gains. The twin scroll part of the turbo is on the exhaust side, not the intake side so it has no effect on it.

These turbos are water-cooled so the oil in the turbo won't boil after a "spirited" drive. Still, I just make sure that I take it easy on the throttle a bit before I park it.

When modding any car, you've gotta pay to play... you never know what will happen. Having said that, if you're concerned with reliability, maybe wait for a Ford Racing tune, but COBB is a very respected company (I personally use their ST tune and it's amazing) so I'd feel pretty confident running it in the Mustang.

The stock air box is being proven to be just as efficient as an aftermarket cold air intake.

true aftermarket is good more for sounds than performance.

I love the sound with that MMR CAI installed but after hearing an Ecoboost F150 yesterday whistling its ass off I'm not so sure that it wouldn't just get annoying

just always as a rule of thumb only do to your car what you can afford to repair IF it ever went wrong or damaged the motor. Im not bashing tunes but there is always that risk and you also put the warranty in jeopardy.

that being said, you should drive it for a while (at least a year or so) first to see what its like and get better acclimated with the engine. That will solidify long term memory of the baseline driving characteristics, also give you more time to see how different modification options are panning out

thanks for the responses. Nice to know that a Turbo Timer is not needed. Thanks for video above, is that the stock Blow off? How did they get it so loud?

We have an entire network of Protuners and the AP can hold over 100 maps. So if you want a balls to the walls tune, you can easily have one made and use the custom map switching to get to it faster ;) With the AP, you aren't limited to a single tune or tuner.

I believe it is the stock bypass valve, the aftermarket cai gives it louder induction sounds.

Thanks Ian,

are you guys planning on building an exhaust system for the EB? Would like to see a something sounding similar to the Focus ST. Again looking for something smog legal, at least here in Texas. No off road pipes for me.

I was in the same boat as you but not soo much on the toys and electronics just in performance, look, and feel of the car. I drive in traffic in Chicago around 50 miles a day and right now my Z28 gets 13-15 mpg if I drive it nice. EB with a tune and bolt ons will be close to the same 1/4 mile times as my Z28 runs now and has great torque. So it will look good, perform great, feel good to drive, save me close to 2 grand a year on gas, and cost 7 grand less to buy than the GT... I was sold on the EB.

also I'm going all Cobb on my car. They make good power and are good and reliable as well.

Yep! We plan to offer everything for the EB Mustang just like we offer for the Focus ST or Fiesta ST:

Intake
FMIC
Catback Exhaust
Downpipe

We do a lot of R&D to make sure we have the proper upgrade path for the car so one part doesn't limit the others. Just like on the other EB cars we support, the FMIC should be your first upgrade for this car too. No release dates on the parts quite yet, but we are working hard! I post teasers every now and then on my Instagram account: ianatcobb
