I recently purchased a 2017 mustang v6 convertible and noticed the drive shaft looking a bit rusty. There are no drivetrain vibration issues and was not sure if the rust should be removed and treated.

Not an issue.

Looks like a low mileage coastal car.

You could put Owatrol oil on it and it will stop the rust.
https://www.owatrolusa.com/product/owatrol-oil/
You can also mix a suitable rust inhibitor oil yourself.
It won't look much better, but you won't have progressive corrosion there anymore.
Of course, it's only worth it if you want to keep the car longer.

If it really bugs you, get what is called RUST Encapsulator, sold by EASTWOOD. Suggest brusk on but is also sold in a paint bomb One treatment will last a lifetime.

Do I know what I am talking about ????

Thanks Nightmonkey. I just purchased it and plan to keep for awhile and like the idea of stopping further rust from accumulating. Appreciate the idea and link.

One more note on this, I prefer to brush the stuff instead of spraying it.
You can probably mix it with some e.g. black paint, how far that has an impact on the effect and which paint (chemical) is suitable, I can not tell you.

This stuff is basic equipment over here, especially in the classic car scene.
Some use it to preserve the visible patina of their vehicles.
