Does anyone else find it difficult to shift into 2nd gear sometimes?

I'm just really hoping it's not anything serious. Ngyuen which shifter would you recommend?
MGW, completely replaces every stock component of the shifter and changes the shifter to a push down reverse. The stock pull up collar always felt trashy and cheap. They just came out with a design revision that should knock off some of the install time from the previous version. MGW bolts the new shifter assembly to the transmission so its ultra solid. You may get a little vibration through the shifter but your hand isnt on the shifter all the time anyways. It is my favorite mod to the car, it feels like a tuned bolt action rifle.

MGW,... v=OExaq3kvr8A[/url]
I completely concur and second this man suggestion. I have just installed an MGW shifter on my car over Christmas. It is tied as the top model made on my car with my coilovers. It is a completely different driving experience. For me.. the shifter completely eliminated all clunking and other noises. & I have no issues with getting locked out at any gear. Its like the shifter nose what shift I'm making next

this looks really cool. How many hours of labor to install? by a shop?

can't decide if I need it, but less slop is better

Paul, even if I let go to try and re-shift it requires the same amount of effort. I get what you mean though. heh.
probably it should never take effort. If it does, you are at high risk of goofing something. So if it doesn't easily downshift into 2nd, keep slowing down until it does. You will learn where that point is.

I think this applies even with an aftermarket shifter

It is not only less sloppy but it is precise shifting. I promise I would not bs a person. I had inadequate tools.. and still got it installed. But if you have the exact tools displayed in the tool list of the video you should be able to get it done in very good time. Obviously the higher you can put your car up the more comfortable it is doing the install. that plays a pretty good role in time consumption. If you check out the thread titled 'MGW, lraises the bar once again' and look at my posts you will see my thoughts on my experience. Others seem to do the job quicker then I.

it took me 3.5 hours taking my time to do it right on jackstands. The new design said it will eliminate about 30 min. George at MGW does them in under 1.5 hours. If you do install it yourself, definitely have a set of ratcheting wrenches for that one long 10mm bolt, gigantic time saver on this project and many other projects.

my housing situation is such that I cannot lift the car. So it would have to go to a shop. But then I will be a little concerned that they will joy ride my new car, to "test" out the new shifter. Bit of a dilemma.

Idea to make downshifting smooth as butter

Paul, even if I let go to try and re-shift it requires the same amount of effort. I get what you mean though. heh.
Dasaf, when you are downshifting to 2nd gear, are you tapping the gas pedal to raise the engine RPM?

If the only thing you are doing to downshift, is only pushing in the clutch, and then trying to shift to 2nd, then you are asking synchronizers to do lots of work. Moving the shifter (from 3rd to 2nd) is asking the transmission to force the clutch disk and input shaft to spin faster.

The shifter will likely easily slide into 2nd gear if you are also revving up the engine while you do this. Some cars have "rev match" and the car will automatically increase the engine RPM for you.

I feel certain the 2015 mustang does not have "rev match". Rev match (without the computer doing it) is done by your right foot.

It is easier to do upshifts without tapping the gas pedal because when you shift up like from 2nd to 3rd, the shifter is going to force the clutch disk to spin slower, and the clutch disk naturally is slowing down as soon as you push in the clutch.

If you downshift a lot without rev matching, you are putting extra wear on your synchros. If your shifter is hard to move, I recommend to play it safe and NEVER force the shifter to go into gear. It should just slide in without that much effort at all.

As others have said, they do make a special shifter mount which will make the standard Factory Ford shifter become more rigidly attached to the transmission. This may help with your issue, but I still would never use tremendous force to move your shift lever no matter what. Right now your car is driveable. I would keep it that way. Peace out. ;)

Yes I do downshift while rev matching, I would never just downshift without rev matching. It's very random thoughts. Sometimes it will be smooth as butter while other times it will be very difficult.

Several times over the last few weeks since the temps dropped, I have been either locked out of 2nd gear when upshifting, or it will pop right back out as soon as I let the clutch out. Only before everything gets up to operating Temp and at low rpms. I have noticed that if I double clutch, I have no issues. So that's what I've been doing until the car is all warmed up.

Thinking about ordering the steeda shifter bracket and trans bushing, hopefully that helps as I don't want to swap out the shifter just yet.

Just replaced the transmission fluid with royal purple synchromax last night. I could instantly tell the difference. The transmission wasn't even warm yet and I didn't have trouble getting in 2nd. I think the $60 was a good investment. Can't wait till I get myself an mgw.

You'll need it. At 1k, I changed tranny fluid to full synthetic. It helped... a little. Got the WhiteLine tranny bushing, it helped... a little more. What it didn't do is remove ANY slop in the gate, and didn't make it go into 2nd gear any easier, up or down. Like the guys above, I bought an MGW... NO problems. Hit 2nd to 3rd power shifts every time. Much narrower gate and no slop. Yeah, there's more vibration in the lever, but it goes into whatever gear when ever I want it. Yeah, it's a lot of money, but there's nothing better. And there's no cheap plastic reverse lever to break like the OEM. Best mod I've bought, hands down.
