So, my 2017 Shelby seems to have a bit of oil coming out of the top of the dipstick tube. The dealer wants to try replacing the dipstick o-ring before doing anything else. It's taken 3 weeks to get the o-ring (they were supposed to get another dipstick). They advise that I can expect to leave the car with them for up to 4 hours. I told the guy that I couldn't see it taking more than around 60 seconds to replace.including opening and closing the hood. The response I got wasn't particularly positive ("...well this Covid thing...blah blah, dipstick needs to be disassembled blah blah"). As a reality check, am I losing it - I cannot imagine a simpler repair. Thoughts anyone?

I'm with you man. It's going to take more time for them to pull it in the bay than to change the o-ring. There's a possibility that I have an extra. I'm sure the 5.2 is the same as the 5.0 as far as dipsticks.

Just buy the dipstick yourself and replace it. Not worth the dealership headache. I replaced my own coolant hose when that was leaking. Paid $60 but had peace of mind.

They are out of their minds. Yesterday I took the stock dipstick apart, including o ring, to attach a Shelby Parts handle. Took 20 seconds on my kitchen counter.

4 hours? Seems about right. You need to consider the 2 hour test drive bouncing off the rev limiter to make sure the problem is the dipstick o-ring. And of course the 2 hour test drive bouncing off the rev limiter after the repair to make sure it worked. Sounds reasonable to me.

Well hold on now....you are not counting the time needed to go out and test out your launch control system and line lock. Ford dealers want to make sure those related systems function correctly.

I’m sure this is one of those four hour minimum experiences. You know, tell you four hours then when it takes two minutes they look brilliant. Or....All the paperwork that needs to be filled out with full explanation to justify the expense to the mother ship. Or.....It’s a first come first served thing so they tell everyone four hours. Or.....Who knows.

sold my 2018 GT350 :(
I bought an aftermarket dipstick that has dual o-rings. But it may be even harder to read than the stock dipstick. Ugh.

Thanks for the replies - I'm going to just buy a new dipstick and do the "install" myself! Shouldn't stretch my mechanical abilities too badly.

I guess I can always drop the old one off (maybe when I pick up the new one!) and have them work their 4 hour magic on it.

You don't have a baseline yet. My suggestion is on your next oil change, top it to 10 quarts, and where it lands is your 10 quart mark. Moving forward, that's where it needs to be. An even better idea, you can pour 8 quarts first and see where the dipstick marks. That's your 8 quart mark, then do 9 quarts, see where it marks, that's your 9 quart mark. Lastly, 10 quarts.

You got a baseline idea of where it all is.

You would think all of us would have the same ā€œbaselineā€. Maybe some of us aren’t letting our old oil drain completely. I let mine drain until I got a drip every three seconds or so, about 1/2 hour. I heated the oil to over 200 degrees. If I was in my garage I would have let it drain longer, maybe for an hour or so or even overnight.
Ten quarts added gave me a micron over the high mark on the dipstick. First drive and it’s still right there.
I can all but guarantee if you took your car to a service center they would not let it drain completely, 15 minutes if you’re lucky, probably much less.

4 hours huh. What are they doing with the dipstick besides changing out the O-ring? Shoving it up their ass?
