My 2018 EcoBoost coupe has started making grinding noise when turning at slow speed. Took it to the dealer, who drained the differential, installed new fluid and a "friction modifier". Not as noisy as before, but still not right. Dealer says he can order the parts at $50 for the clutch rebuild kit and 6.5 hours to install. My warranty ran out 6 months ago (of course) so this will cost me over $700.

How many have had this issue and is replacing the clutches the solution?

I looked at the complete traclok diff instead of replacing the plates, but they don't support the 3.15 gearing I have. I looked at a used differential from a local Mustang salvage place called Midwest Mustang, but that is $600 plus installation.

you need to toss the 3.15 anyway :)
3.55 is what you want.

No-no-no-no-no......don't put in a used diff.

Just spend the $700 and be done with it.

Do 3.55s don’t go back to 3.15s. it will definitely wake your car up.

Definitely do as others are suggesting and talk it over with your Service Center (if Ford) and see if they will cut you a better deal to just drop a new complete rear diff in it….

You should reach out to @LevittownFordParts on here too to price out a complete rear diff.

I noticed something similar on my 2020 GT on the first cool morning when the car was about 5 months old. It's only on the first time backing out of the driveway when the car is turning. When the car straightens out it goes away. It's more pronounced when it's cold and seems to go away after driving a little. For example, I can drive to a parking lot and go forward and backward in circles without hearing the noise. I don't notice any other noises from the rear end when driving.

I mentioned it to the service manager when they were installing the supercharger as that was about to void my warranty. He said that he couldn't hear it when he listened for it. At least it's documented so maybe I can get some relief if/when the differential fails. Too bad stuff doesn't just fail when there's something wrong so that the problems are clear and undeniable ....

I didn't know they made a clutch kit for the 8.8 super.

OP can you ask your dealer for a part number for the clutch kit?

My 2022 Mustang GT California Special Edition has had that since I got it new and my dealership told me to tell them if it gets worse. The only time I hear it is if I'm accelerating and turning either right or left when it's been sitting for a few hours.

Particularly when I accelerate out of my parking lot onto a street when leaving work is when it's most noticeable. Weather doesn't seem to play a part at all.
