Difference between 4th gear and 5th gear dyno pulls

A buddy of mine had his coyote 5.0 dynoed and his numbers were low, I think 397 rwhp and 352 tq on dynojet, hes got a jlt cold air and catback with a canned tune and come to find out the guy who ran it on the dyno had it in 4th gear. Would it make a decent difference if it was ran in 5th with 1 to 1 ratio??

That doesn't seem that low to me. Could have just been the dyno or weather. Most are usually 405-415 from what I've seen.

Weather has nothing to do with it unless his numbers were uncorrected.

Yea weather was i think 85 deg and 50% humidity , was pretty humid and hot lol. Shouldnt torque have been higher though like 370 ish?

You want to it to be in 1:1 because that's where you will make the most power bc it's the most efficient

A lot of people (tuners) will use 4th gear to pump up there numbers

I have run back to back in 4th and 5th on a dynojet in similar temp conditions with the same mods. 5th gear I made 415whp with jlt, canned sct 93 tune, and a resonator delete. In 4th gear it consistently made less power and torque, with this setup and my stock airbox setup. I always run in 5th now. I don't remember the exact loss in 4th but it was around 10 less I believe. I will have to go back and look at the graphs again next time I am at my buddies dyno.

4th gear shows lower numbers, both in tq and hp. You will get a higher reading in 5th. My car was run in both 4th and 5th on the same day and HP was 10-13 higher in 5th gear.

Thats what i figured, im guessing the torque was 10+ ft lbs higher too

You want the gear closest to 1:1. The Dyno drum measures TQ. Then it looks at RPM's and how fast the drum is spinning to calculate what the gear ratio is, and how much HP the car is making. The closer the gear ratio is to 1:1, the less "calculating" it has to do.

Sometimes because of the gearing you have to use 4th, you may hit the speed limiter in 5th.

what about autos mine dynoed 399whp 379tq in 4th would that mean i can add 10 to those numbers. getting a jlt cai this week tuner said stock airbox cant flow enough air over 6500 rpms.

I would think gearing is more of a percentage thing than a flat number. and unless you have a factory freak I think it's safe to assume your number is good or even a little high already on the dyno you used.
