I put in a mcleod rxt over the weekend. Not a pleasant experience doing it on jackstands. This was also my first clutch and the idea of saving 900 dollars to have a shop do it made me push myself to do it. I have done about 100 miles or so. There is some chatter when just starting to move but it is getting better. I did have shims for the floater plate. I counted 3 thin and 1 thicker shim. It was the same on all sides. I phoned mcleod and asked about it. Someone on the tech line basically asked me if when I bolt up the floater plate does the bottom disc have wiggle room and I said yes. He asked if when i remove the alignment tool does the disc drop and I said yes. He then said that's fine. I asked if I needed to make it any tighter and he said no just leave it as is. When I pulled the trans I wasn't that gentle with it, it took some force to really get it all the way out and I tried to keep it supported as best as possible but I'm worried having that much load on the input shaft could have hurt something. Getting it in wasn't as bad I got it about 1/8 of an inch from the motor and did draw it in with the bolts that are where the dowels are. I inspected the rear main seal, it looked fine and the throwout bearing also looked fine. There was the very slightest of play in the input shaft like if pressed on it I could make it move every so slightly but I couldn't jiggle it around or anything. The new flywheel has its on pilot bearing which looked fine. I made absolutely sure when the new clutch went in it line up with all the marks mcleod has put on flywheel, floater plate and pressure plate. Now on to a few things I am noticing while driving.

Mcleod says to just put around in stop and go traffic which I am doing. I've done just a few minor pulls in 2nd and 3rd to see how it is holding and in 3rd theres a little slip and then it holds. I think it just needs to be broken in more. The most worrying thing is there is a sound not always present but enough that its got me worried. It sounds like it is coming from directly under the shifter. I have a Barton shifter which was trans mounted. I changed that to a body mount and it seems to have lessened the noise. It's only present when i'm driving along without the clutch pushed in. I do not hear it on decel either. It sort of comes and goes. Sometimes its there for awhile while im in gear driving and other times it comes and goes quickly. Sometimes I hear it more when turning. I never hear it taking off in 1st its only in the higher gears. It sort of faint and only if I put the exhaust in quiet mode can I hear it. It sounds like a bad bearing sort of like slight grinding. I have no idea what it could be. I did not lube the splines on the discs. The input shaft had factory lube on it from before. I did not lube anything except the flywheel bolts to get the correct torque. Also I tried a 2-3 shift at a brisk pace and the trans grinded. Its the only time it has ever made that sound. The car has 25k on it. I just replaced the trans fluid with bg syncroshift 2 and the diff with amsoil BEFORE the clutch job and drove it like that for 1k miles without any sounds. Im not sure if I put the driveshaft back on to the trans or diff in the exact spots that they were in but I'm not noticing any vibration at all. Everything sounds perfect at a standstill and there's no change in noise when I press the clutch in and let it out. I would hate to have to remove the trans again. That was seriously horrible. I'm inclined to follow the break in period and let it bed in for a thousand miles and then reassess where everything is at. I'm wondering if anyone else who has swapped in a new clutch noticed anything similar to what I've described and if it went away or if you had to intervene.

Drawing it in with the bolts is a BIG no no. If it doesn't fully seat something is in the way or not aligned right. Hard to say what could be wrong at this point.

It was hung up on the dowels.

While the RXT is street-able it's no where near as smooth as you'd expect from a stock clutch. Once broken in yes it will still have some light-ish chatter, noise you hear from the trans is it's solid hub vs most OE clutches have a sprung hub while reduces / eliminates that kinda noise. Saw you talking about slipping in third, your either pushing way too hard or already have an issue. Hope it works out ok.

Hard to say for sure but it kinda seems like the input shaft bearing isn't pleased with you.

Could be? I'm not sure. It's gotten better that's for sure. I have about 500 miles on it. There is no slip anymore but still some chatter.

Just to give you an idea of how aggressive the disc material is on the RXT. Just pulled trans n clutch out of my '05, flywheel face looks like a brake rotor where you ran out of pads 100 miles ago. Yeah it's amazing how badly both it and the pressure plates faces are being eaten. No burns, no other marks just a well chewed up surface. For that clutch, situation normal.

RXT is no street clutch IMO. It's a 'on/off' drag clutch. Expect it to be noisy, and don't be surprised if you break the input shaft.

In my case, street manners are actually much better vs what I'd expected, worst part of mine is the chatter and low RPM rattle it causes in the trans. Have nothing I'd call close to a n off / on drag clutch.

Exactly! I learned the hardway back in the day. Bellhousing cracked and a chunk broke off. fixed it but never doing that again.
