Recently purchased a Mach 1 with the handling package, which comes with 305/30-19 front and 315/30-19 rear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Removed the wheels and tires from the car as soon as I got it home from the dealer, so they only have 10 miles on them. On Friday I took them to a local tire shop who I have been using for years to have the tires separated so I could sell them. Sunday another 6G member and I met to complete the sale. As he was inspecting them, he noticed this damage in the sidewall of one of the 305's, so obviously he could not buy that tire. On the way home I stopped at another shop that I have used before and asked if they thought this damage could be caused during tire removal and they said yes, if the "shovel" on the tire machine catches the sidewall wrong. From watching Youtube videos, it seems like it might also be possible if they are not careful with the amount of force they use to break the bead (e.g. they were rushing, which the shop that did it was definitely rushing to get them done Friday). The date code on the tire is late August, so they are only 2 months old. Taking the tire back to the shop this morning to see if they will own up to the mistake and either order a new tire or compensate me for the value of the tire. Hopefully they don't try to say that I did it (not sure how they could even think that since it had air when I dropped it off) or that the tire was defective so it's not their fault. I'm also wondering if the Cup 2 compound is somehow prone to this because it's softer.

UPDATE #1: Took the tire to the shop that removed it. Luckily the tech who removed it happened to be at the front desk with the manager when I came in. Got through the biggest hurdle of them (sort of) admitting fault but doesn't look like they're gonna make this easy...

Me: Picked these wheels and tires up from you Friday afternoon and this weekend noticed a tear in the sidewall.

Tech: Those bead tears were there when I removed it.

Me: What are you talking about?? It's in the sidewall, not the bead.

(Tech and manager look at it)

Tech: Oh, I must have been thinking of some other tires. I do remember the machine getting hung up on one of yours. ( :curse: then do something about it when it happens, don't hope the customer doesn't notice!)

Manager: OK I'll have to talk to the owner and see what we're going to do about it since it's a used tire.

Me: It's got 10 miles on it. It's new.

Manager: If it was mounted, it's used. We'll give you a call.

Sigh... have a feeling I am not going to get satisfactory compensation any time soon.

That sucks. Hopefully they don't dick you around too much after admitting they damaged it and then hoped you wouldn't notice. I'd fire someone over that if I was the manager (for several reasons).

I know it seems crass, but you really should have checked them over when you went to pick them up. I get you know that now...just want to call it out. Photos before are a great idea too.

There is always small claims, buy that would be more for the principle of it instead of getting your money back.

Also, if they want to lowball you make them refund you for the work they did. Maybe that will help offset things.

Honestly I never even considered the need to inspect the tires - I checked the wheels since that's normally what you'd expect to be damaged. Also, I've used these guys so many times, they are my go-to for all repairs, there is a level of trust built up.

UPDATE #2: ...and this is why they are my go-to, because the manager can be a bit of a hardass but the owner is a straight shooter. The owner called and said he's sorry, they have the most high tech tire equipment you can buy (I knew that already and is one reason I use them) and has never seen this happen before, but the tech did admit it. So he'll order me a new tire but isn't sure when they are available, and if I'd rather have the cash value of what I had sold them for he'd write me a check. Took the check, case closed. Good guy.

Solid response. S#it happens, but the owner stepped up and did the right thing.
Family business, his dad owned it for many years and recently retired and passed it on to his son, who is repping the family name very well!

Well that's a good result. Those tire places usually won't admit fault unless you catch it before you leave.

I had one tech come out and tell me to air the tire up to 40PSI, and then argue about the right pressure for the tire, which seemed unusual, but I didn't see the red flag for what it was until later when I noticed the tire was obviously leaking air. Turns out that guy had broken the bead and was trying to convince me to run 40psi - like that would cover his tracks. Of course when I went back because the tire was leaking air, they wouldn't touch it.

I took a couple pizzas over to them for lunch and told them you could have done the easy thing, but instead you did the right thing, they were surprised and appreciative. Good on them.

Update...

So the factory handling package wheels and tires are sold, and I ordered and received a set of 305 & 315/30 Pilot Sport 4S tires and Ford Performance PP2 black 10.5 and 11" wheels to replace them. Have Ford Pass points to redeem so took them to the dealer who sold me the Mach 1 to have the tires mounted. Went to pick them up today and both rear wheels had a gouge around about 1/3 of the edge of the rim! They had them stacked up for me to grab and go but I inspected them before leaving and called the manager over. He called in the tech who did it and the tech said he did the fronts first and must have forgotten to reset the "duckbill" on the machine for the wider rears. :headbang: So then we have to get the parts manager over to look at them and here come a couple other kindergartener techs to gawk at them. Upshot is after an hour of fiddle-farting they are ordering me two new rears and didn't charge me for the M&B on the fronts. Glad they are making it right like the tire guys did, but damn. It's just friggin' wheels and tires, shouldn't have to be such an adventure!

Once you find a good tire shop, you usually should stick with them forever. These cars go through a lot of rear tires if you drive them right lol. Ive been going to the same tire shop for atleast 8 years

Yep, if it wasn't for the Ford Pass points I'd have taken them to my go-to shop (even though they were the ones who ripped the Cup 2, shit happens).
