I think a better clutch is gonna be the cure for gear lockout.
Not sure about this, since it's not like all cars have lockout. The gen 3 factory twin disc is actually pretty decent from an engineering standpoint, so other than for making more power I don't see where the deficiency is that would necessitate an upgrade.

I think if you've already done away with the body mounted shifter and still get lockout, then that would infer a potential clutch problem. Maybe a weak pressure plate where the spring fingers for the release bearing can't overcome the rotational inertia of the plates at high RPM? Just trying to think of a scenario that works.

I am interested in getting a MGW shifter installed and I was quoted $1700 with my shifter!
Does anyone know of a good place in the Houston area that is more sane?
Ask them how many hours they are billing for. $1700 sounds like they're expecting to drop the trans and do the install that way which is overkill. They should be billing 2 to 3 hours at most.

They told me 7 hours which comes out to around $242 per hour if I recall.

Yep that's the issue right there. They're billing you for removing the driveshaft, exhaust, dropping the trans, mounting the shifter and reinstalling it all. That's overkill. Definitely look elsewhere. For the hell of it I just called a local performance shop in NJ and they quoted me $500 top for the job.
