The rods were fine , If I didnt rev above 8k I think it would still be alive, the piston skirts blew the fuk up and rocker arm retaining clips and cam cap bolts
the pistons are cast, would generate lots of heat at those RPM even non boosted.
The OEM Predator slugs are forged, and do last longer with high RPM and boost heat.
It will be interesting to see how the 12:1 forged slugs do in the S650 once they are tunable.

Aren't they the 'hypereutectic' piston? They're a cast piston, but the best version of a cast piston. At the end of the day, sustained high RPM is hard on any of them and the extra strength of forging is actually important for this application.

I might be mistaken, they could be hypereutectic, but I thought the S650 got all of the GT500's forged pistons and rods. I'll look into it and see what the "coyote" spec book says if it has been released yet.

I think I got like 22 hours of WOT out of my OEM engine but I revved too high too many times and my piston skirts failed and my cam cap bolts failed after my rocker arm retaining clips came off from over revving I think. This took me 60k road miles, 20k at 800 rwhp.
8500rpm and boosted, I'd say the Coyote is pretty damn impressive if that's what it takes to kill it (and even then killing it is an exaggeration as you said the car was still running even damaged)

Predator Engines can take 8500 Rpm consistently, I'm actually using those components in a Gen3 head. The crank is slightly different than the 5L Crank and is better suited for that kind of RPM.

I think if you're running RPM over 7700 -7800 RPM in a stock 5L Coyote, inspecting the timing components after 10 hours or so would be worth while.

Cooling these engines, getting more airflow on the radiator and through the engine bay would probably be the first thing I would do.

I was talking about in the S550.

stangmode had tuning and fueling gremlins .... I do remember he blew up a minimum of 2 5.2L engines.

The rods were updated gen 1 to gen 2 coyote. I'm pretty sure the pistons are the weak point for most road racing applications. Also, track time vs drag racing isn't really the same stress on the motor.

Most gt4 motors get about 20k-30k km max, and they are pretty heavily detuned. The amount you detune the engine, how well its cooled, and the use case will change the answer a lot. 100 hrs as stated above doesn't seem too far off.

I thought the rods changed to forged (from the boss 302) gen 1 to gen 2. Forged pistons in the base s650 would be surprising.

edit* double checked and rods were changed to forged stiner rods from the 302. Not sure if the gt500 are the same, but marketing wise I guess it sounds better to say the gt500.

Like I said, it all depends on the use case and the amount you detune it. Also, 24hr Nurburgring isn’t a good comparison for other tracks. The track itself is actually very easy on the engine and brakes since you’re getting so much cooling. How did those cars blow engines? Rods from gen1? Oiling? I’m not familiar with mustangs taking part in the race tbh, but I see a p5 in class in 2016? Not sure how many issues they had.

Also the MT82 is trash, I wish they put the tr6060 like the Camaro.

Also, I think the mustangs at the Bathurst 6 hour are stock coyotes? I’m not sure how they’ve faired but I’d assume the diff is a weaker link than the engine in its stock config.
