Hi everyone,

I am experiencing a clicking noice when driving slowly (eg parking) and fully steering to the left. It sometimes clicks once or twice and it I can also feel it on the steering wheel…Attached a video where you can hear the click twice.

Any guidance?

Thanks
Tom

Mine does that as well. I've taken to not turn the wheel 100% either left or right.

Only one direction or both?
Good question. I definitely remember hearing it when fully turning the wheel left when making some u-turns. Can't remember if I remember it to the right as well, but I avoid doing it just in case.

BTW, I think this has been discussed before and is a known issue with the S550's steering. I think it's not recommended to turn the wheel fully.

That isn't a click to my ears, that's a clunk of something hitting the body of the car.

Like a loose exhaust system or something.

funny, this thread was out of my scope till now. however, same noise when full lock left turn, for example when driving out of a parking spot. Does NOT happen when NOT moving. Only happens when starting to drive. Does only happen when wheather is warm.

Currently its 0-3°C Berlin it does not happen. Universal joint and strut mount left was changed, with no positive effect.

Same here:

(someone send it to me having the same issue like me)

(thats me)

You need to get the front off the ground and get under the car with a big pry bar and test every ball joint and rubber bushing for even the tiniest bit of movement. While it's up check the wheel bearings top to bottom and side to side for noise or any movement.
Or if you're under a warranty take it in.
Don't ignore the noise because no matter what you have heard or been told, that is not a normal characteristic.

I have this exact sound when going very slowly (like in a parking lot) with the steering turned to the left. It doesn't have to be fully turned. It will do it even when it's half turned. It never does it with the wheels straight or turned to the right (not even fully right), and it doesn't do it if I turn the wheels while the car is stationary. It's not the movement of the steering that's causing it. It's the movement of the car itself. If I turn the wheels while I'm stopped, then start moving while the steering wheel stays in the same position, it will make the sound after one or two yards.
It sounds exactly like it does in the above videos.

I took it to the dealership (I know dealerships get a bad reputation around here, but our local one is really good), they kept the car for several days checking absolutely everything they could think of, and they couldn't find anything wrong. They were stumped. Everything is nice and tight, there's no play in any steering or suspension component, no nothing. They checked the wheel adjustment as well, and it's spot on.

What could it be?

I have this exact issue as well, the dealership kept the car 3 days. They went through every nut and bolt and couldn't find anything, although they could hear the noise on test drives. Sometimes I can also feel a thump in the gas pedal along with the noise, makes me wonder if it is something around the firewall area?

Now that you mention it, I think I can also feel it slightly, though I'm not sure whether I feel it in the gas pedal or in the steering wheel. I'll pay more attention next time.
It might be something totally unrelated to the suspension or steering. Something that's getting hit, or at least touched, by something else while the car is moving with the wheels turned to the left. But I can't for the life of me figure out what that could be. It is the movement of the car that causes it, not the turning of the wheels. The wheels being turned is just a facilitator, not a cause.

At least they didn't tell you it was a normal characterist.
I'd much rather be told we've looked and can't find it than "they all do that ".

No, our dealership is really good, they do know their stuff and never try to play me for a sucker. Besides, the problem is quite recent. I didn't always have it. It was fine for 14K miles, then it started doing this. So it can't be normal.
I do think it's harmless, though. If everything has been thoroughly checked and found OK, then it can't be serious. But it's still annoying and I'd love to know what's causing it.

I have a consideration in mind that hasn't been discussed regarding this issue: could it be related to the brakes or the braking system? I can sense the noise in the pedals when it occurs, and since the brakes are directly connected to the pedals, when I apply them, I hear a similar 'clunk' noise, which is as expected when braking.

Could that be an aspect no one thought about? Because I think I would not feel it in the pedals, when it would be anything else than the breaks? Or maybe Im wrong...

I've been paying more attention to it over the past two days, and it turns out I can't actually feel it, neither in the pedal nor in the steering wheel. I can only hear it.
