Went ahead today and replaced my stock filter with a K&N drop in as well as removed the carbon filter shown below in a picture I found online, as I’ve heard that’s what restricts the HP by 10 on 2022-2023. I left in the lattice part that held the filter, which I assume has no effect on the gains. I also left in the part by the MAF as I’ve heard that can cause the car to run lean. Correct me if I’m wrong please! Cheers

You got it spot-on. You could remove the lattice part if you'd like. I did the same thing with my '23 and it seemed to improve throttle response.

Does the lattice come out permanently if removed? Or is it able to be reinstalled if ever needed for some odd reason?

I think that it's melt-welded in there and you need to cut the welds to remove it. If you're careful, and are willing to add screws it may be re-installable. Mine went into the bin. ;)

Well of course both of ours fell off by accident… ;) on a serious note, thank you for answering these questions I could not find answers to elsewhere!!

Just wanted to add, I know it’s only two model years but surprised there’s not more threads about this, saw people are already doing it to the S650

Almost 6 months ago I picked up my 2022 and this was the first thing I did to it. Back then there were even fewer threads :)

However, it was Tony's video on YouTube that talked me into doing it. On his Mach he gained 20-ish hp, so I figured getting my "10" hp back would be easy and cheap. Like you I left the lattice in the box and left the piece by the MAF in as well.

No ill affects yet and I don't expect any.

I only added the K&N drop in air filter on my 2023 Mustang GT auto, California Special, and I noticed some improvement on my throttle response.

Does anyone know if the carbon filter in the lattice ever gets changed or cleaned for maintenance?

Even better is to buy the housing from a 21 or older. I had my old one from my 21 so I swapped out the 22 for the 21.

I'm sure there a lot of people that have their stock boxes sitting in basements unused that would love to sell them.

Couldn't doing this rather than just removing the filter from 22-23 box potentially cause the car to run lean due to the 18-21 boxes not having the honeycomb by the MAF?

To me it appears it may changed or cleaned due to the nature of the lattice being able to be opened and closed. I wonder if they replace it at the same time as the engine air filter.

I studied this in a fair amount of detail and shared my findings below. Short version is that removing the carbon trap filter and the lattice that holds it will simply permit more airflow and gain some power. However, removing the grid/insert tube where the MAF is located will increase diameter at the MAF by 2.5 mm. This throws off the ECU's airflow calculations by 5.3%. Fuel trims will adapt to maintain lambda (good) and it may or may not store a DTC. I'm running a custom tune so I removed the grid/insert tube. As it turns out, the resulting inner diameter at the MAF matches the 2018-21 intake at the same location (97.5 mm).

I'm on stock tune, and have zero DTC's. But I'll also admit I've felt zero difference going from carbon trap and grid insert of my stock 22 to the factory open no-grid intake that was on my 21.

Does it make a difference? I want to believe the dyno's I've seen, but its such a minuscule change that I doubt it makes any real improvements on the road. If anything I think that the 22 has some other ECU changes that Ford didn't announce because my 22 is significantly stronger than my 21 was even with the FP tune on it.

Is the true point of the lattice and the honeycomb insert just to direct airflow through the intake box a certain way I gather?
