I've done it MANY times in my life, but never on a push button start car. Forward and reverse. Works either way :). My 68 VW beetle I did it every day for 6 months when I was a poor college student and could barely afford gas much less a battery LOL... When its really fun is when you put in neutral, get out and push and run with the car till it gets moving fast enough, then jump in, clutch, in gear and pop. Good times...
LOL the push and run. I remember not pushing it fast enough then having to try again and again. Good times indeed. Had a 1994 Ford Probe. I ended up wiring a push button start directly through the firewall to the starter. Can't tell you how many times friends would push it to screw with me.

Why pop the clutch in second gear, wouldn't first gear provide more engine revolutions for an easier start?
It will start in first but it's smoother to do in second and doesn't hit the engine as hard. Also the car won't stop as quickly dropping into 2nd than it would 1st so you get a little longer for the car to 'catch' if that makes any sense.

I had a car I drove for like 2 weeks like that, had to park it on a hill every time

Pop started every manual I owned at one point in time 🤣 but that was years ago. Never tried it on the 21 GT/CS. Had an opportunity last week when original battery died in driveway. I took easy way out and used my NOCO charger.

Bump started many, many things over the years.

This thread and topic brought back a memory that I had forgotten from 30+ years ago. A buddy had a complete baler of a flat-nose '60s Econoline van with an inline six and column shift manual trans (great for hauling motocross bikes), and the starter teeth on the flywheel had totally been destroyed. He would park it about a block from his house pointed downhill on a side street, so his morning ritual was to pump the gas the proper number of times and bump start it. Failure meant walking to work. Extra sketchy in the winter months. Good times.

I had a buddy with an early 80's VW Rabbit that we were trying to bump start. I had done it a few times at that point and "knew what I was doing", but he had never done it and didn't believe me. He and I were pushing it and he would jump in and pop the clutch, but it wouldn't fire off. We did it 4 or 5 times before I realized, I hadn't told him he needed to have the key in the "acc" position. Our legs were toast by the time we got it started. Great workout....

Yes, I carry a NOCO battery pack in both my vehicles. I have never used myself but have jumped several friends off at car shows and cruise ins when they would leave their ignition on to run the radio or charge their phone or whatever. Indeed they are very helpful, a wonder of modern engineering :)

Caught me off guard. Weather has been great so I’ve been using the stang all week. Just finished washing on weekend and went to move it and that dreaded slooooow crank then nothing. Original battery so it lasted 3 years and 2 months. I don’t remember batteries failing so soon years ago. Good ole Die Hard gold lasted. At least I was home.

In many countries where manual cars are the norm and money is tight, many (most?) drivers know how to push start a car…The same with changing a tire because a tow truck is too expensive or it might not even be available.

like someone said, second gear makes bump start smoother (when you push start in first, the car might even suddenly stop). This is very evident when push starting motorcycles: in first gear, when you pop the clutch the rear tire might skid (you can sit hard on the seat while popping the clutch to prevent skidding) and second/third works well. I. Cars, reverse is generally a ratio in between 1st and 2nd so it should be okay. If the engine stops running while driving at speed, you don’t engage second because that would be a money shift; you just put it in a higher gear (4th, 5th).

and yes, I have pushed started MANY different cars and bikes over the years and I cannot even count the times I have helped pushing on the street. The last car I pushed started was my 2017 Jetta just to teach my wife how it’s done. Now, with fancier/more electronically complicated cars, all bets are off (looking at you, fancy German cars…).

Regarding whether you need some juice in a battery: I guess it depends on the electrical system. Don’t quote me on this but I think cars with alternators usually cannot be pushed start without battery/no power in battery because you need power for the ignition system. I know an old car of mine needed some juice in the battery for push starting, but my old motorcycle with generator didn’t even have a battery (it didnt have a kick start so it was push starting only).

When I wanted to take my car for a test drive the battery was dead when it was pushed from the showroom. The jumped it with some kind of small power pack and we went for a ride. I stalled it at a light but thankfully only needed the slight momentum to start it again with a pop in 1st.
No need to hit the starter button at all. Hit the button without depressing the clutch then roll and pop it while in gear and it will fire up.
They put the wrong battery in it which lasted a little over 1 year and when the local dealer eventually replaced the battery they made me pay because it had the wrong battery installed by the selling dealership. I called bs and the smdealer who sold me the car sent me a check to reimburse me.
Tech said failure was due to dash cam and wrong amp battery. He put that on the slip. FitcamX does not run unless the car is running so the kid was a dick to put that on there.
