Hi
Could the throttle cause an intermittent problem and not set an error code ?.

had this ongoing problem with my Bullitt where when starting it will be buttery smooth with a quiet engine and pulls hard.

suddenly the next time I start it runs like crap with louder engine noise clicking noise like a relay noise.

it’s more noticeable at lower rpm’s and feels like it surging and jerking slightly. Still pull at wot but not as much as it can.

I’ve checked everything
Spark plugs
Injectors
Maf
Vacuum leaks

also the data logs show a healthy engine and don’t show any difference when running smooth or rough

Sctx4
AFR @ 1.00
Lambda @ 1,00
Stft @ 1,00
Ltft @ 0,99

all healthy numbers but it will suddenly change character and seem jerky.

could this simply by the throttle body causing the issue ?.
Just wanted some input before I buy a new one.

thanks

If at occurs at idle as well -
Look at your CVT SOLENOIDS ON YOUR DATA LOG. INTAKES SHOULD STAY STEADY ~20-19.5
UP AND DOWN SWINGS 10-15deg is sign of cvt (VVT) solenoid issue.
Yes WOT will still seems OK

Would that be
VV intake B1 @ B2?.

both staying steady between 19,65 and 20,05 degrees
Thanks for your advice

Check out YouTube Canadian cruising had a throttle body issues. I think his car was making funny noises and running rough.

Yeh when running rough my engine sounds like a diesel exhaust note is off as well.
ford won’t do anything they say it’s all running like normal.
But I promise one minute it’s smooth as butter and then next start it’s rough.

in the higher rpm’s it still pulls like a train but definitely lower in torque sensation.

notice it most in the lower rpm’s when cruising when decelerating it surges and when I put the foot on the gas it will jolt and then pick up.

also downshifts will become jerky too.
I’m suspecting the throttle body because imagine it’s not closing properly during foot off gas downshifts and this is the jolt I’m feeling ?.

Maybe the ecm is demanding specific air but it’s not happening cause the throttle body is opened or closed enough to the fuel ratio ?.

Have you pulled the tb and cleaned it thoroughly? They can get gunked up around the blade’s shaft where it enters the housing on either side, which could affect the way it functions.

I use brake and parts cleaner to clean mine.

You also said you checked the MAF sensor. Did you visually check it or pull the housing with the sensor still installed and thoroughly clean it using MAF Sensor Cleaner?

One last thing I’ll suggest is not to overtighten the clamp, as you could deform the tb housing and cause it to become out of round which can also lead to the blade sticking.

Thanks for coming back.

yeh pulled the MAF out and gave it a good soaking with Maf cleaner and left it to dry.
I removed the throttle body and gave it a good clean. It wasn’t dirty at all.

how loose should the butterfly valve be
On the throttle body?. I mean if I shake it, it will rattle. Not sure if it’s suppose to be tight ?. I still have to force it open though when disconnected.

good tip - I did over tighten the clamp and loosened it off a bit.

Could either of these cause the intermittent problems I’m having ?.
and seems strange it only happens between starts.

if it’s rough it will stay rough and if smooth it will stay smooth until engine switched off. Also doesn’t do it all the time.

it may stay rough for a week and then suddenly go smooth for about 2 days then back to rough again.

thanks for helping
Ford just shrugged me away saying nothing shows up in diagnostics and no codes.

Yes, mine is a little loose and it does require force to open when disconnected. I only use a 3 finger method (thumb, index and middle finger) while rotating my wrist, to tighten my clamp using either a nut driver or 1/4” drive ratchet with a short extension on it.

Anything is possible with electronics. I do recall seeing a procedure for recalibrating the tb. You might try doing a search for it and give that a try as well.

I run a Soler Performance ported factory tb on my Bullitt. I did have problems with it sticking open and shut when I first installed it and sent it back to Soler to adjust it. Whatever they did corrected the problem and it’s been fine ever since for over a year now.

Huge thanks
I’ll have a read through this.

literally just got into the Bullitt now for a drive and she’s in a happy mood. Smooth as silk. Even the exhaust note sounds healthy. No rattles nothing at all.
Just stopped at the shops and I guarantee it will run like shit when I start it again.

quickly plugged in the sctx4 tuner just in case but nothing that stands out different from running rough.

vvt solenoids are good.
both Intake and exhaust are giving me an average of 20 degrees.

Maf is good
Stft and Ltfts are spot on too
Lambda at 1.00
Measured Lambda at 1.00

all seems good
