I am looking to purchase a set of winter tires but am stuck between Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 or Blizzak WS90. Anyone out there have any experience with either? i would love to hear about it.

I have the WS90. Excellent snow tire, I’ve had zero issues in as much as 6” of snow.

How about ice? and what size tires are you running?

235/50/18 on the tire size (stock non-PP GT size). Ice they do ok but not great. To be fair, unless you have studded tires, you’re not going to do much better than ok on ice.

I have the WS90s on my Camaro with an 18x8 wheel. I've used Blizzak WS90s on Mustangs including my GT350 and also on my FiST. On the Mustangs I was running a 19x8 wheel size. I'm happy with the WS90s in general. I don't get stuck. The Mustang is fairly confidence inspiring in low-traction situations.

When I used to own a base Mustang GT I would often turn off the traction control even in the winter. With the higher performance versions, I think normal mode is fine. I would use weather mode in the GT350. I always use snow/ice mode in the Camaro, because it is more neutral than the Mustang. It is ready to oversteer or lose the rear on braking more easily.

They make more noise than summer tires, and they feel a bit vague and squishy on dry roads. I've been happy with how long they hold up with my driving style. This is only my second winter on the Camaro, but I had a set on different Mustangs for 3 or 4 years and they still worked just fine.

Blizzaks are fine for traction, but wear out almost instantly. I highly recommend Nokian tires.

Interesting you’ve had wear issues. I’ve had mine for almost 5 years and I’m still at 8/32”.

I just started on my second set of WS90s. Excellent snow performance. I have rarely unintentionally lost traction with them. They have even screwed up a few donuts by gripping too well. I live at the top of a hill and have motored past AWD crossover types that were just slipping (presumably they had crappy tires and/or no idea how to drive in the snow).

The WS90s have two sets of wear bars. The first is the end of the special snow performance rubber, the second is the typical minimum tread limit. There is a big drop in snow traction once they wear down past the special rubber.

I never could find the snow traction focused WS90s version in a 19" (they were all "performance" versions in 19"), so I run the base 18" for winter tires.

As mentioned above, they are a bit vague and squishy... feels like driving on marshmallows compared to the summer tires. Under normal driving conditions they are fine but go easy on the shenanigans.

I got rid of my ws90s for nokian Hakkapeliitta R5. Nokian has the best winter tires imo. The only other tire that is very close is the x ice.

I had X ice on my GR86 and that car was terrible, but it might have just been the car more so than the tires.

The Michelins aren’t the most confidence inspiring. “Recovery traction” is super weak, or said another way: once you start sliding you really feel like you are going to die. The continental snow tires behave similar. Fresh blizzaks and all Nokians which I have driven/owned recover very well.

I remember being at a stop light with a very slight uphill in the Toybaru and not being able to get going. I had to rely on others to let me through after the light turned red again... the car was that slow. And the light wasn't a short one.

I didn't have many problems with driving around once I got going. The GR86 was a joy to slide around and very controllable for the most part when the roads were slippery from salt or a little snow. But it wasn't very good with deeper snow or thick ice.

+1 on the WS90. Have had them on our '16' EB for winter driving since we got the car in late'15'; Terrific snow traction, decent ice traction, long wearing --7/32 with over 25K of winter driving--and fairly quiet on the road. I've added about 60lbs of extra ballast to the trunk and this car just goes down the road without drama in the snow.
