So ive done spirited driving in the car and some rolls on the highway with an assortment of vehicles. While running errands after dark tonight I decided to throw it in track mode with stuff disabled to see what its really like to drive it with safeties off. This isnt the highest HP I've ever driven but by far the heaviest. Driving on wet roads I figured it be the best way to see what happens with the car in track mode. I honestly wasn't ready for it. Punched it in 2nd, tired immediately spun, kept going into 3rd still spinning. I was slightly correcting to point the car in the direction I wanted to be. All was good until it shifted into 4th and it just wanted to go sideways where regardless of correction it seemed to do whatever it wanted, almost throwing me in a full spin until I left it down to about a 1/4 throttle. I don't ever drive like this normally in the car, I just was curious to see how it was in the different modes, especially with no vehicles on the road.

Im guessing I'm not used to a heavy weight car when doing something like this. My fox bodies would always turn themselves straight when doing something like this.

Im just not sure if its because of the a/s tires on it or my inexperience with such a heavy car?

I don't think I'll be turning off advanced anytime soon..

Must be an a10? I've had advance trak off for 4 years over 700hp in my gt and beat this thing like a red headed step child ever day with no issues. Only once was it close to out of control and even then if you ease up on the gas it comes right around.

Yeah its an a10. My main thing is I'm running all season indy tires from the dealership, 255s. I daily the car in the summer, but I just think the tires aren't up to what I need for the car.

Edit :: it was when I left off the throttle when it corrected and bit and almost through me into a spin.

I would suggest finding a local event to test your limits in a safe and controlled environment. These car's don't self-steer very much and the grip levels are much higher than your old foxbody. When these cars lose control it's at a faster speed and you have to actively countersteer into the slide to keep it in control. Learning that on the street is a high risk environment with big consequences.

Things will be worse in the winter. Summer helps the tires stick.

Weight is certainly a factor in difference your seeing. additionally Your Foxbody also had a solid axle, and I think the wheel base was 7? Inch's shorter front to back, and 6-7? Inch's shorter side to side. The weight distribution for a fox was more toward the front, and less evenly distributed than the S550.

Your right though, correcting a fox in a slide or drift certainly felt more natural and "controlled"

Wow! Makes me feel as if I should've gotten a Fox Body and but a fresh and upgraded engine in her. At this point I'm glad I don't have an A10. And I just bought my wife a GT with an A10. I hope she never goes sideways on into a spin. Has to be something you could add to the suspension to prevent these things even if the computerized safeties are used. She's been trained professionally, but not with these newer Mustangs with the three piece rear ends.

so basically you did everything wrong but you're blaming the car.
Cool story.

A three piece belongs on a suit. This three piece rear end has caused some bad accidents and hurt many bystanders. Mustang should be changed to Sidewinder. Take the horse off the grill and put a sidewinder snake. In place of GT on the decklid put caution. If it weren't for these computer geak safeties lots of people would get hurt.

Yeah that's something I'm definitely going to look into. After two summers of driving the car i thought I had a pretty good understanding of how this thing behaves, but I guess I was a little over confident in that. I'll have to see if they still hold events in the rain, because I'm more interested in how the car handles in low traction conditions.

I didn't realize there was a professional driver / instructor on the forum. Could you impart some of your experience or wisdom of driving in wet conditions that could help me out or maybe some instruction on what to expect of the vehicle in said conditions? Possibly how the car will react and what my reaction should have been in the same conditions? I am always looking to learn with every vehicle I drive. It would be much appreciated.

Our local region holds events in the rain so long as there isn't lightning.

If you get the wheels spinning and are sucessfully keeping the car straight at low speed, your goal should be to back off enough to get the wheels to hook. Dont pile on more and more and more.

you really pushed your luck going for more and more at increasingly higher gears. That kind of wheel spin at higher speeds is harder to control and theres nothing to gain and everything to loose. You’re not wrong to want some practice but that was obviously a bad call to try that at those speeds on the street in conditions like that.

As Mavisky says look for a closed course like an autocross to practice. The skills you gain in the dry will translate to wet events, and yea most all clubs run in the rain (as long as lightning isnt an active threat). Learning to handle little slips and slides in the wet can be really rewarding, but in a straight line pushing it in the wet and going for speed just aint worth it.
