You’ve exactly described the set up I’m looking to replace my active exhaust.

You don’t happen to have any sound clips do you?
Not onhand. Not a fan of cell phone vids, they never replicate the sound as good as in person. I highly suggest it though, i always get compliments and even a few have x pipe guys have asked about my setup thinking of making the switch. I can try to make a video tho if your curious.

Keep in mind that the resonator will make the exhaust very quiet, like stock non-active exhaust sound levels. I have the x pipe and the resonator and I switch them back and forth because I alternately get tired of the noise and tired of the silence.

I had the same setup and same opinion on the sound. Just too loud. I put on the Borla resonator and its perfect now.

I find the start-up, idle and cruising speeds amazing with the resonator. Deeper tone and its perfect. It's definitely louder than stock.

What I don't like about the resonator is when you hammer the throttle. It sounds so quiet and tame compared to the X-Pipe. Same with cold starts which is significantly louder(reson why I bought the resonator as I leave for work before 7AM)

I put the stock exhaust back on for now and am enjoying the car again.

No doubt about it, the X-pipe DOES make more noise that the resonator. However, the discussion here deals w/the actual sound (or tone) of the exhaust ... not the amount of noise.

Have a friend hop into the driver's seat & take off w/you standing behind the car. There is a BIG difference between inside & outside db levels. Even w/the windows down, the exhaust is still more muted than from the backside of your Mustang. What you are hearing inside is more of a sound 'resonance' than the actual exhaust 'note'.

If you just want more noise, then, by all means, the X-pipe is the way to go. But a lot of us are a bit more discerning about wanting that deeper V8 sound thru the entire RPM band. No right or wrong here ... just a matter of preference.

I agree. I’ve never heard my car from the outside but I’ve had friends tell me that the S type setup is alarmingly loud.

Definitely a bit of an exaggeration...or your friends have never heard a loud car.

Is your Borla system installed w/the (included) X-pipe or the (optional) resonator? "Alarmingly" is very subjective, but definitely louder than the same system w/the optional Borla resonator..

Well, the person in question was a BMW N54 guy so he had a lot harder time making noise than I did. I switch back and forth between the X pipe and the resonator, like a “porridge too hot, porridge too cold” kind of thing. I think the X pipe makes the exhaust very obnoxious, but sometimes that’s what I’m in the mood for.

I am personally quite curious to hear what the ATAK that I have sounds like with the Borla resonator. I absolutely love the tone, but every once in a while I wish it was tamer. I've yet to find a video with this pairing on stock headers and cats.

Yea get rid of the X. i have S types on my 2018 with an H pipe and active exhaust, sound is amazing. Track mode has a great deep aggressive tone to it. The only time there is the slightest hint of rasp is on cold start but once the pipes warm up it resumes a great tone. IMO x pipes on these cars always sound like shit, all just raw noise without tone and screams i need attention. Good luck and swap the x pipe out and you should be fine.
Have the S Type as well, what H pipe did you go with?

In case y'all are wondering Mishimoto did an experiment dynoing several X pipes of varying angles, H pipes and the stock resonator they concluded that they did not see a significant change in performance in any system.

So it's largely just about the sound at least on our s550s.
